Description
whenever i start painting robots, it's a sign i'm procrastinating doing my homeworkanyway, I saw the first three episodes of TF Prime Beast Hunters, so (kinda)spoilers ahead? They're okay episodes. They suffer mostly from the same problems as the first two seasons- convoluted plot, introduction of unnecessary characters rather than fleshing out existing ones, no real consequences for the Autobots, and inconsistent writing. I don't understand Megatron's motivation at all. He's just a big hulking force of destruction, a 2-D villain. Why? Why does he want to rule everything? Why does he belittle and undermine his troops, and yet expect loyalty from them? Explain! >:I
Aaaand Starscream. He started off wonderfully in Beast Hunters, he was slimy, underhanded, vicious, and clever, thriving under Megatron's "respect". But soon the writers had him back to a sniveling syncopate clown. Urgh.
Starscream is my favorite character, even if he has the most inconsistent characterization(sometimes a badass, sometimes a coward). He is the most active character, and arguably the most successful Decepticon, with the highest Autobot on-screen kill count(a whopping 1!) and is behind the most near-fatalities of the Autobots ( Arcee, Wheeljack, Bulkhead, Optimus Prime, etc...) It was he who led the Decepticons successfully in Megatron's absence, and it was him that crafted and carried out the plan to steal the Omega Keys, all on his own.
It's incredibly frustrating that the writers keep demonstrating Starscream's brutal effectiveness, and then yanking it away for comic relief. What I'm saying is, I want Starscream to be allowed to be a villain. I also want the Autobots to suffer some damn consequences plot-wise, they are completely outnumbered in a hopeless war, the show would have more emotional resonance if one of those bloody bastards died, and stayed dead. Preferably Smokescreen, the robo Mary Sue to end Mary Sues.
I'd be REALLY happy if the writers catered to my two desires and let Starscream murder the shit out of another Autobot. Like Smokescreen. XD Sorry, I don't even dislike him that much, he's just SO cliche and boring."I'm the plucky young protagonist! Radical!" If he ends up with Arcee I WILL FLIP MY SHIT

Oh yeah, Starscream can be quite the large ham when he does his thing. An assassin with a silver tongue. That's why I like him. Compared to every other incarnation of him (including his Michael Bay incarnation), Prime Starscream takes the cake in the badass department.

Finally, someone who agrees with me. Starscream had the most promise to actually be a legitimate villain in the show, and then when he'd finally get some traction and become a force to be reckoned with, they pulled the rug out from under him. And he is the only one to have murdered one of the Autobots onscreen, let's just make it two. And, someone also agrees that Smokescreen was such a clichΓ© character. It would have been fine to introduce a new character but with more depth. I would've preferred maybe an older Autobot that had been in the war for a while, or at least a not so Sue version of Smokescreen.
Anyways, I love the picture! It's way cool! Added it to my favorites.

Thank you.
Yeah, the inconsistent handling of Starscream was why I fell out of love with the show. He started out as such a deadly, slimy, deliciously evil murder machine, but if the writers kept him up that way, it might've meant some of the main good guys (gasp) could actually DIE. Can't have that, then we can't market their toys! So they made Starscream's character essentially comic relief. Urgh. He's supposed to be a coward, yes, but also dangerous if underestimated. But that show was all about maintaining the boring, boring status quo. >/

Prime himself even said that Starscream was more dangerous than Megatron because he was unpredictable. Obviously, if Prime feels that someone is even more dangerous than his archenemy, then they are and should stay dangerous. Not random comic relief.
Keep up with the awesome artwork! Look forward to seeing more MLP art from you, too.

On Megatron: I dunno, he started out with good intentions and then became the bad guy because of all the violence he created. The gladiator in him never dies, so I guess it's one of those "insatiable lust for power" deals.
On Starscream: Primus yes! His potential is there! I'm hoping he somehow earns the drone army's respect and throw a rebellion against Megs. (Because going Armada and joining the Autobots is already way out of the question.)
On Smokescreen: ... You've already said it. He's another Rodimus. He's already got the Faze Shifter; he doesn't need the Matrix.

I saw an interesting post on Tumblr discussing the likelihood of STARSCREAM becoming the next Prime.
Smokescreen. I hate him even more than some of the characters [humans included!] of Energon and Cybertron!
At least they were admitted to be irresponsible younglings interfering with the older-bots' decisions!

Lopoddity In reply to SkylerFarrier [2013-03-25 23:28:18 +0000 UTC]
Omg I read that post too! Starscream as Prime could work, but that would require episodes of buildup and amazing writing, an unfortunately, the writers are firm in their placing of characters as "hero" or "villain", with no wiggle room.
Yeah, Smokescreen is pretty dull. I wish they gave his screen time to other, more deserving characters.

:I Haven't you noticed? MUCH of the stuff that should "require episodes of buildup and amazing writing" is just kind of sloppily rushed.
And that is why I don't like TFP. It's about the only one where it's SOLID black-and-white.

Well, yeah, you're right. Actually, you're absolutely right! Everything plot-wise that should have been built up over time-such as Dreadwing's character arc and subsequent death, Breakdown's potential as a character, Starscream's HUGE waste of a character arc, and particularly, the Orion Pax saga, were incredibly rushed. Why? It's like the creator's are scared kid's will get bored or something. Of giant fighting robots with movie quality CGI.

This show had such potential, but it all kind of tapered off after the Orion Pax mini-arc ended. The S2 finale kind of recovered, but that's gone down the tubes already.

Smokescreen is not a mary sue. He's a character I can relate to in a way, wanting to see action, and then being thrown into the thick of it without full training. Sure he's an Optimus fanboy, but who wouldn't be? It'd be like me going and meeting Peter Cullen. Predaking, if you truly watched the same first three episodes I did, is emoting. You saw him glare at Starscream as he was insulted. The so called mindless beast, isn't so mindless. Also, has there even been a HINT at robot relationships in this show other than Ratchet hitting on Arcee? Because I highly doubt they'd go and do that.
Otherwise, good picture, nice rendering of the Decepticon Second in Command.

Thank you for your comment.
You may be right about Smokescreen not perhaps being a Mary Sue, but I still say that he is a very standard character archetype-The rookie hero. And it's boring.(To me). It's been done so many times in other movies and shows that it's become a massive cliche.
I wouldn't have a problem with Smokey if he wasn't such a screen time hog. He popped right out of the blue to be the center of attention, taking screen time away from other Autobots I'd rather see developed, such as Arcee, Ratchet, and Optimus.
He feels like he's there to appeal to the younger boys, and he just doesn't sit well with me. Don't get me wrong though, he can be compelling at times, but most of the time I see him I'm like urgh.

Arcee has had so many development episodes that I don't think she needs any more solo development. We'll see what happens, but I rather like Smokescreen and while he may seem like a standard character type, so are the rest of the characters in the show when you whittle it all down to the core details.

I'm a big fan of Arcee, and I agree that she's pretty developed. Still, that's why I'd like to see more of her. And Ratchet. And June Darby. I'll agree to disagree with you on Smokescreen.

Ahhshdfdf I really agree with you in the description. Poor Starscream, I'm getting tired of him being used as comic relief as often as he is. We've seen he clearly CAN be a badass, can we just let him have it, at least once? I mean some of his failings fit but... mehhh sometimes (or often) it's just too much.
It also annoys me how they keep shoving new characters in. Can we PLEASE have some development with the old ones? *puppy eyes* I especially want to see knockout evolve, I feel like he's just on the edgeee of some serious madness, esp after losing Breakdown.
Also predaking bothers me becuase he's just there to sell toys. I mean does Megatron REALLY need a giant dragon to hunt down his scattered, broken, and outnumbered enemies? COME ON. fucking do it yourself, primus.
Side note I love the title because I know where it comes from /o\ and of course your artwork is lovely n-n

Thank you for your lovely comment. I agree! Knockout definitely needs more character development-can he get an episode to himself, oh pretty please? He feels like a wellspring of untapped potential as a character. I wish they would have focused a bit on his relationship with Breakdown, and shown us his reaction to Breakdown's death-I think they were total bros, and BD's death should have impacted him a little! Then we could see an unhinged medic waving around his buzzsaw after some unfortunate bystanders.
Oh well...though I get the feeling that the writers might be planning some interaction with him and Airachnid...
Ohhohoho...Predaking. What. A. Letdown. He looked amazing and threatening in the promo trailers, and then they actually revealed him and he looked like a Happy meal toy. Why should we be afraid of it? The Autobots will defeat it, because they're the good guys. Also, it might kill Starscream, and I feel like Starscream deserves a more spectacular death.(Oh, yes, I can tell Starscream is going to die. Every Starscream dies. Also probably Knockout.) I hope Predaking dies early so we get to see more interaction between the old characters. And maybe Soundwave will speak at last! long comment is long

Kai-ni In reply to Lopoddity [2013-03-25 03:42:24 +0000 UTC]
Ahhh yes please some interaction between Knockout and Airachnid. I mean, KO showed a little flicker of insanity when Silas showed up on the Nemesis: KO seemed particularly delighted to chop HIM into bits for what he did to Breakdown. Imagine what he thinks of spiderlady. o.o This needs to happen - though I'm not sure who'd win that fight.
But I totally agree Knockout needs an episode to himself before the show ends - do something with his character, he has so much potential /roll away
AHDFSHDF YES someone else who thinks Screamer needs to die! Every Starscream dies. see this journal - [link] BUT YOU ALSO READ MY MIND thinking that Predaking will kill him - that was my first guess as well. He's already pissed it off once, and it seems a spectacular death, not something that happened to the last few Starscreams. (I'll be sad if Megs kills him, that's so expected)
STOP READING MY MIND. I also believe Knockout will die - I'm hoping in that fight with Airachnid. Seems like she'd win, honestly, and wouldn't it be utterly ironic if he couldn't get revenge for Breakdown? Sad but... somehow fitting.
STILL READING MY MIND SJFSLKDFJ SOUNDWAVE. I want Soundwave to speak so badly. Or have his visor shatter. either one would make me happy.
Hasbro are you listening. I think most of these speculations will be way better than anything that actually happens *shifty eyes*
π: 0 β©: 1
Lopoddity In reply to Kai-ni [2013-03-25 04:25:54 +0000 UTC]
OMG NOW YOU'RE READING MY MIND. I also think Knockout will die in a fight with Airachnid-she killed Breakdown, a mech twice his size. Although Breakdown didn't have a medical drill, loose morals, and a thirst for VENGEANCE. Maybe he'll team up with Arcee to fight her, and then they'll become bffs and Knockout will be redeemed and not have to die. Wishful thinking.
If Soundwave's visor shatters and we see his face, my head will explode with confetti and nerdy squees. Same if he talks.
I dunno if any of these speculations will come to pass. TFPrime seems to be magnificently talented at introducing neat concepts, then tucking them away, never to be seen again. Knockout may never get to shine. Starscream will probably die at the claws of that stupid toy-selling robo-dragon.
Aaand, I get the feeling that Ratchet and Rafael(the improbable child genius) will somehow reprogram Predaking to hunt Decepticons. But it's not Hasbro's fault the writing is bad sometimes...the show must be immensely expensive and tedious to animate, and the writers probably have to write in new characters to sell more toys. "Now make Smokescreen a prime so we call sell our Smokimus Prime action figures!" Urgh. I REALLY hope Smokey doesn't become a prime. And I don't get the introduction of Ultra Magnus, other than to please G1 fanboys. He's a boring character.
π: 0 β©: 1
Kai-ni In reply to Lopoddity [2013-03-25 04:35:24 +0000 UTC]
I think that is wishful thinking, LOL. but an interesting idea!
YES I will explode with squee's if we ever see Soundwave's face. Not likely to happen (They gotta pay to animate that and add it to his model or make a new model) but it's a fancy idea. And he does have a face - it was in some comic, though the artist's rendition looked stupid. I think he would be scarred but goregous. And in the episode where wheeljack cracked his visor, we saw his POV and he was seeing past the crack. Meaning he sees through the visor meaning he has optics under there ._. That I wanna SEE.
And yea, pretty much. I will actually throw a huge hissy fit if Starscream DOESN'T die. Starscreams die before the series ends, that's just what happens to them.
LOL the improbable child genius. That was my first assessment of Raf as well. I'm all YEP there's always one of those isn't there LOL. Someone has to magically hack military networks for them.
I do love the show's animation, it reminds me why I want to be an animator <3
You know, I don't hate Smokescreen as a character. He can be a bit annoying, but I do like his concept despite the initial fanboyishness. He was immature back on cybertron, just trying to be a good solider and win the hearts of his superiors and be a hero or something, and now he's finally waking up to what war really means. And I'm so amused he went back for Optimus XD BUT NO HE DOES NOT NEED TO BE A PRIME. NO NO NO it ruins his character completely and makes him a mary sue and no no no. He'd better fucking refuse.
And yea I don't get Magnus either. He ANNOYS ME by basically taking over the autobot faction and.. well yea just being there to please the G1 fanboys/girls. I'm TRYING to give him a chance though. Predictions that he and Smokescreen will butt heads.
