This is a really cool idea - and it has excellent execution!!

I like to consider myself a unicorn. I'm definitely not society. xP

I don't know what was on your mind when you painted it. But I notice the unicorn is crying. Normally people assume the "unicorn" type would be happy, excited with their color, but instead she's sad, sadder than the other "normal" types. Perhaps you're saying being unique isn't the good thing that most people assume it is. That it leads to being isolated and even if everyone's sad, it's better to be sad together than sad alone. I don't know. I'm just pondering.

inktailswallow In reply to Pokey-Bunny [2013-06-12 02:48:09 +0000 UTC]

That's interesting how it made you think that. When I saw it i thought of something very different. I think that the unicorn girl is sad because since she is different she might be treated poorly by society because of it, and may feel that she is not as good as the "normal" ones. I don't think that this painting is necessarily saying that being unique is bad, so much as its saying we tend to treat people who are different terribly. A lot of people out there preach about how being different is a good thing, but often times that idea isn't applied to the real world, and individuals are often bullied simply because they do not fit in. I think that what is trying to be said here is society is wrong by treating people this way, not the the people themselves are wrong for being that way.

Pokey-Bunny In reply to inktailswallow [2013-06-12 03:12:47 +0000 UTC]

I'm saying it can be bad because it leads to isolation, and that perhaps some people glorify differences. Take the newest trend of people bragging about mental illnesses, using them as an excuse for their behavior or self diagnosing themselves. Like people saying "I have ADHD, look there's a squirrel!" But they haven't been to a doctor and been diagnosed. They just say it because they think it's funny without knowing that some people struggle with it.

There isn't anything wrong with people being different, but at the same time it shouldn't be the thing that you think is most important about yourself. Accomplishments are more important.

Am I making sense?

inktailswallow In reply to Pokey-Bunny [2013-06-13 03:52:34 +0000 UTC]

Yes I think i see what your saying. As someone who has been personally diagnosed with mental illness, i do understand the frustration involved when people make statements like that. A trait that sets you apart from others can be a negative one, and and not necessarily something to be glorified.
When i was thinking about differences, I was thinking about more positive or neutral ones, like a talent or an interest that sets you apart from others, or simply a physical trait that sets you apart like red hair that might lead to people bullying you simply for that difference. Differences are not always good, i suppose i realize that, but regardless of whether or not the difference is a bad one like my anxiety disorder, a good one like maybe someone's ability to solve complicated math problems with more ease then the majority, or more neutral like hair color, skin tone or sexual orientation, that person does not deserve to be treated poorly with that difference used as a justification.

I suppose what your saying is that the difference itself shouldn't be considered that important, so much as the accomplishments made with that difference (in the case of a talent) or despite of that difference (as in a mental illness). I guess if people stopped thinking so much about all the little things that make us different from each other like race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, among other things, instead of focusing their energies on actually making a difference in the world then perhaps we would be living in a friendlier and less lonely place. Differences can be bad things, they can be good things, and they can be neither, but the feelings of isolation and loneliness that come from how other people may treat us because of them are always bad.

Pokey-Bunny In reply to inktailswallow [2013-06-13 04:02:35 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that's exactly what I was talking about. I think accomplishments are far more important that things you can't control, and you're right, people shouldn't be mistreated for things they can't control. We should be more open and accepting and people shouldn't be alone or isolated for being different. And I see that unicorn girl crying and it's sad. I take it to mean she's crying because she's isolated for something she can't control or change.

Now the comments annoy me. "I'm totally the unicorn, I'm a total freak~ ex dee"
This is beautiful, but the "unique snowflakes" who think like this just piss me off. Everyone is unique, different, think different way than the others, act differently in different situations, some people show it tho others, some people don't. You're just the same as the others are in your "originality".

Normal people DON'T EXIST. There's not such thing as a "normal person".

AdorkablePeanut314 In reply to Hickepop [2013-06-12 01:31:48 +0000 UTC]

Amen! Normal doesn't really exist because everyone is unique and different and special which is actually the real definition of normal when describing people in our society.

VeenaVal In reply to Hickepop [2013-06-12 00:34:31 +0000 UTC]

I totally agree with you. The whole "special snowflake" idea pisses me to no end. You are unique, just like everybody else. You may have different views, ideas and opinions, but in the end we're all made up of the same materials.
