THE CHANGING OF THE GUARDS:

When Princess Anna and her husband, Istvan, arrived to witness her father’s funeral, they brought 100 fighting men in silver mail and halfhelms decorated with wings. This upset the Captain of the Guards, Vrillos, who did not approve of letting barbarians into the palace. He resigned soon after her coronation since “he served an Emperor, not a princess.” Some guardsmen agreed with him while others felt insulted by the comment.

During Isaac’s assault on the city, the lieutenants meet in secret. They argue as to who to support. Vrillos will support Isaac and is planning on opening the gates for his army. The discussion is moot when violence breaks out between them. The “barbarians” arrive to intervene in the massacre, sending Isaac’s supporters fleeing while the remainder tell them of the traitor’s plans. They help repel Isaac’s attack at the gatehouse.

THE SIEGE:

Isaac sent out his cavalry to the strongholds outside the Imperial city to assess their loyalty. Only three defied him and within a few days they surrendered. Isaac ordered the defenders to be treated with respect as they were taken prisoner because he could not blame them for following the oaths they’d sworn. He even praised them for their loyalty.

King Istvan brought one hundred men with him. He assembled another 800 men to reinforce his guard prior to the siege.

Daily there were constant clashes between the Loyalist and Imperialist troop from morning to evening, as the prince marched his army past Adrianople. Some contingents of the royal guards had been recalled to defend the city while others harassed the vanguard. Others turned on the empress and joined the usurper. Isaac dispatched some men to keep track of these hosts.

From the high part of the road, they caught sight of the gatehouse towers whose torches showed against the darkness. Moonlight glistened off sword and shield atop the ramparts here terror and elation made Isaac’s heart beat furiously.

“The God’s Gate is open!” He bellowed. “The gate is open! Heaven is with us – advance!”

I kind of pictured this . Except you have several royal guardsmen talking treason or not, then utter chaos with people dying and survivors running to alert their companies of what happened. It would be a mini-civil war with the next few days having guard groups attacking each other and the opposing armies in the city walls.
