Description Old Notes: The Lord of the March. The deceased Emperor Alexius named him the provincial governor of the north. He is regarded as a military leader, but unliked by his lords. When Anna was named empress, Istvan was named as king. As a foreigner in a strange land, he is the natural enemy to many conspiratorial co-conspirators.

All he wants is to live a peaceful life with his family. Allegedly a bastard son of the barbarian king, he rose the ranks as a skilled fighter and mediator. He was legitimized and seen as the future king. Who died soon after. The kingdom fractured his many sons, and others, fought for the throne. Istvan sought foreign aid and the emperor saw an opportunity to secure the northern border and gain a powerful ally.

The Bulgars had been a kingdom as long as the empire. But the Hungarians were only a step above their barbarian ancestors.

He’d heard the whispers about the half-civil barbarian who sat beside his sister. Some said Istavan was an unclaimed bastard son of the king to the north. Others said he was a lost Bulgarian prince who swindled his father into a pact to restore his realm. If so, the lands Istvan claimed was not even a sliver of the lands the old kings claimed. Once they called the open plains and hills south of the Black Forest home. Then the horselords came and drove them into the mountains and chilly valleys. They took the lands, named themselves kings, and eventually united against their betters to the south.

Istvan was not a handsome man. He was taller than Ioan had been, with a prominent hawkish nose and dull, dirty, brownish eyes. His shockingly red beard and mustache were finely combed and his long hair was not tied back but instead worn like how a whore would. His clothes were clearly barbarous with a long orange tunic covered by a green coat with a fur-trimmed upper coat.
