Stargazing
“We need to get that healed,” Chai said, twisting Link’s paw this way and that, inspecting the graze trailing down the outside of his arm having clumsily tripped down a steep slope.
“It’s okay, Chai,” Link insisted for the fifth time with an amused laugh, “it’s just a scratch!”
“It could get infected! We’re in the middle of the woods!”
“Chai is right, Link,” Cyllene spoke up softly.
Link hung his head in defeat. Deep in the Mythic Forest was certainly a terrible place to get a cut: they were too far from anywhere to be able to visit a healer at a hub on short notice. They were travelling to the foot of the mountain that held Light Song’s Temple to see the stars; Cyllene had offered to speak in front of a small group of kebs that same night as they gathered for a forecast meteor shower. It was still early afternoon but they had quite a ways to go before they would reach the camp and meet up with the others. If he had to turn back to visit a healer now, he would surely miss the light show… which he had come to terms with… the problem was that Chai and Cyllene were insisting on escorting him and then he would be the reason that everyone’s trip is ruined.
“We came all this way,” Link reasoned, dropping down to sit on the grass… his jeans were already grass-stained… what was one more. “It would be unfair to everyone else if the speaker wasn’t there for the meteor shower. I don’t want to be the reason that the trip gets cancelled.”
“It was an accident,” Cyllene reasoned with a sympathetic frown, “no one will blame you.”
Link sighed, “I know it just… sucks,” he huffed.
Diphylleia, who had been watching them anxiously from nearby, suddenly began to walk over to them on light paws. She was their escort through the Mythic Forest and she knew the place like the back of her paw. She was a timid little keb but she seemed determined as she reached them.
“There’s a cabin,” she said in her whisper of a voice, “a herb shop just West of where we are right now.”
That piqued Chai’s interest, “is there a healer?”
Diphylleia’s head tilted to the side slightly as she responded, “I don’t thing the owner identifies as a healer,” she looked at Link, “but they make herbal remedies… I’m sure they would have a salve for you.”
Link brightened up at that, “oh thank the deities,” he yipped, leaping to his feet, “Rovan’s gonna kick my ass either way but he would’ve kicked it harder if I didn’t turn up tonight and made him worry!”
Satisfied with the turn of events, Chai ushered Diphylleia into leading the way to the herb shop. It would be a small detour; they’d planned to reach the camp by early evening but had enough leeway to veer off-course and still make it in time for the stars to come out.
The ground was still uneven and Link made sure to not lose his footing again.
Sooner than expected, a charming, little cabin could be seen nestled between the thick trees.
“Huh,” Cyllene hummed as they approached, “isn’t that Valkyrie?”
Link risked taking his eyes off of the terrain to see for himself and, sure enough, Valkyrie sat at a quaint handmade table just outside the cabin’s door. She was drinking tea and chatting pleasantly with who Link assumed to be the owner of the shop. He could only see their back so far but the keb looked lithe and tall and friendly what with the way they were gesticulating as they spoke to the warrior keb.
Link felt a touch at his elbow and found Diphylleia directing him to sit on a mossy rock a little ways from the shop. Chai and Cyllene seemed to letting the cabin owner know what had happened and he waved sheepishly with his good paw when Valkyrie looked over at him worriedly. He watched the willowy keb rush into his shop and Cyllene and Chai begin chatting with Valkyrie, no doubt about the stargazing venture… perhaps Valkyrie would join them. The shop keeper re-emerged, arms laden with jars and Diphylleia murmured a quiet, “I’ll leave you to it,” before joining the kebs at the table.
“Hi there,” the keb said pleasantly, “may I take a look at that graze?”
“Sure,” Link said easily, raising his gaze away from the jumble of pots the keb was holding and up to meet their eyes so he could properly introduce himself… huh.
The keb looked… familiar. Looking into the keb’s eyes gave Link an unsettlingly strong sense of de ja vu and from the way the keb had trailed off and was staring blankly at him too assured Link that they were feeling the same. Funny… they looked similar when Link thought about it… almost as if they were…
His eyes widened in the same moment that the shop owner’s did.
…Just how many curve balls was this trip planning to throw at him?
