so this was Gridman episode 1. mmmmm man this was....well let's not sugar coat it this episode was a real misfire especially since it's coming from Trigger of all studios. I had a lot of hype and hopes for this considering for 1 it's Gridman where back in the 90's his concept probably wasn't the best as technology wasn't what it is now to really push the idea and it's being animated by studio trigger. one of the few studios who rarely get it wrong when it comes to animation and story. you know when there aren't 2nd party studios trying to influence them. looking at you A-1 pictures for fucking up the pacing on Darling in the FranXX.

the animation was okay but the CG aspects at least for me seemed really out of place and didn't feel right for a Trigger Studios animation since their battle animations tend to be over the top and powerful and impactful. I know this was originally a Toku show but did they really have make the movements feel limited? i get what they were aiming for but come on Trigger this was your shot to really add in that over the top flare you are known for.

the next issue I had were the characters. they were just....so bland. nothing about them seemed like a natural reaction to what goes on in their lives. you got the one girl who acts like she's emo or something and always has to be depressed about something then you got the guy with glasses who i appreciate in trying to be excited for stuff but didn't really feel believable and our main hero who turns into gridman.... okay i know he's high school and they were going for that whole Touma from a certain magical index kind of character gut this felt like a really lazy approach especially him acting so nonchalant about his memory loss or that he's the only who could see gridman.

overall it was not a great first impression and the episode just feels like a misfire on something Trigger should've been able to handle with ease.
