Freshly-baked headcanons:

•Contrary to Zim's boasting, Irken soldiers do require sleep. As many of their autonomic functions are tied into their PAKs, "shutting down" for maintenance could be considered their race's equivalent of a restful slumber. Damaged and defective units may take longer to recover; these intervals can be comparable to the sleep patterns of most humans. Zim has since devised a lofty living quarters for himself in his home base, feeling it would benefit to better understand the "human condition." Skoodge has attempted to follow his compatriot's example, allocating a hammock for himself in the sub-levels of Zim's base.
•The origin of the ID PAK system can be traced back to the early days of the Irken Empire. Originally designed to help early explorers survive long periods of uninterrupted space travel, the apparatus was remarkable in its ability to convert basic sugars and carbohydrates into rich nutrients, as well as providing a degree of metabolic control that greatly slowed the aging process. Interfacing directly with the host's nervous system allowed it to act as a secondary brain, maintaining lower functions while simultaneously preserving the host's mind to live beyond mortal death. Over time, PAKs became a staple of the Irken lifestyle and would overtake many facets of their race's natural biology.
•Thanks to the efforts of Membrane Laboratories, human technology and infrastructure has rapidly advanced over the course of a mere few decades. It's even comparable- and in many cases, compatible with Irken hardware and operating systems. The reasons for this are not fully understood, by humans and earthbound Irkens alike. Membrane himself is quick to deny allegations of plagiarism and/or extraterrestrial assistance, and has a team of lawyers on-call to silence such ludicrous claims should the need arise.
