Description
After the successful debut of the Cobra in Vietnam, many countries have become interested in the issue of creating their own exclusively combat helicopters. With small intervals, development programs for such vehicles were launched in Britain, Germany and France. It is interesting to note that the current concept of the attack helicopter was not yet developed - combat helicopters were not seen on the battlefield as separate units, their main task was to escort and cover up conventional transport helicopters. In 1968, the Bundeswehr handed over to MBV (Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm) the requirements for a prospective escort helicopter (Bewaffneter Begleithubschrauber - Escort helicopter, abbreviated BBH). The requirements were compiled on the basis of information received from Americans on the perspective helicopter Lockheed AH-56 Cheyenne. In fact, the military would like to get a slightly simpler and cheaper version of the AH-56.

By 1969 in MVV prepared two projects for the BBH program. The main difference between them was the choice of powerplant and aerodynamics of the helicopter. A single set of weapons was used: a coupled machine gun with a revolving block of barrels, an autocannon in separate from the turret machine guns, a different set of pendant weapons, including blocks of unguided rockets and guided anti-tank missiles HOT. The installation of separate turrets for machine guns and cannon allowed the pilot to take control of one of the turrets and fire simultaneously with the shooter for different purposes. The BBN-1 was a conventional helicopter, but thanks to the installation of two powerful engines, the Daimler-Benz DB 720 was able to reach speeds of up to 370 kilometers per hour.
