Description Alternative History: Tanks of the 30s of the surviving Russian Empire. Cavalry tanks and scouts. Part I

Since the reconnaissance tank needs significantly improved speed, maneuverability and maneuverability compared to the “linear” infantry vehicle with preferably equal armament, we decided, first of all, to lighten the new version as much as possible in order to painlessly change the gear ratios in the final drives.

To do this, the thickness of the side and rear armor of the tank hull was reduced to 1/3 inch (8.46 mm). It was this thickness of armor that was put on most Russian BAs since WWI, and it was for this armor that the English “quarter-inch” (6.35 mm) was changed, which was on the British Austins supplied to Russia. Thanks to this replacement, the armor of our BAs was penetrated by an ordinary pointed rifle bullet no longer from 200 steps, like the English one, but only from less than 50 steps. When installing armor with rational angles of inclination, it practically did not break through (tested on the BA developed by Mgebrov during WWI).

The frontal armor of the hull and turret was kept at the original English level of half an inch (12.7 mm).

To further reduce weight, the reconnaissance and cavalry version was originally designed with a single turret. In a fairly spacious (for a single) turret with good visibility, shifted to the port side, the tank commander was located, and on the other side of the drive shaft, on the starboard side, in the fighting compartment of the hull, a radio operator's workplace was mounted (each reconnaissance tank was initially radio-equipped) . The feature of the tank was the handrail antenna of the radio station, mounted on racks mounted on the fenders.

The armament of the tank was provided almost at the level of a linear vehicle in the form of a twin 20 mm AP Madsen and a 7.62 mm Madsen machine gun (in a linear tank, the same gun was installed in the commander’s tower, and in another, smaller machine gun, there was a Maxim machine gun) ).

No further design changes were made at that time. But even thanks to what was done, it was possible to reduce the mass of the tank to almost real six tons (the linear one weighed about 10 tons), and increase the speed with a 90-horsepower engine to 34 km / h. Marked reconnaissance tank T-2R.
