Description Once the largest city in the United States of America, New York was the financial and cultural hub of the nation. At the time of Wolfenstein: The New Order, it was destroyed in December 21st, 1948 by Der Bestrafer (The Punisher), a nuclear bomb developed by the Third Reich. An irradiated wasteland by 1960, Nazi media boasts that the region may soon be rendered habitable in less than three years, thanks to the Nazi-developed terraformer technology. The Nazis are planning to rebuild New York by 1967 with Über Concrete.

New York City, specifically Manhattan, is a major plot point and playable location in Wolfenstein II. Being exactly as one would expect, it is an irradiated, burned-out ruin. The skeletons of entire buildings eerily curl with altitude due to the kinetic energy of the nuclear blast stretching them.

A small but formidable cell of rebels led by Grace Walker reside at the top of the Empire State Building, which in itself is badly damaged but still standing nonetheless. It is also the only habitable location left in the city without protective gear, with the radiation levels at the topmost floors being non-lethal.

Quite true, just wanted to throw out something that's been busy around in the back of my head for awhile.

As much as I love the New York level (the alligators were great) it's actually a prime example of Bethesda not getting how the Nazis operated. Hitler was well aware that Einstein and other Jewish German scientists had an interest in nuclear power and that they were working on the Manhattan Project. So basically, as far as the Nazi Party was concerned Nuclear Science=Jewish Science. They did do some research, but it never had much support or backing.

There are other things in the series had bug history geeks like me, but overall who cares, the games are really fun.

Then again, if the Nazis in Wolfenstein are willing to use Da'at Yichud technology (made by Jewish scientists and engineers) to win WWII, I think it would be plausible to assume they'd embrace nuclear weaponry research.

That's a good point, and to the game's credit the Nazis seemed to want to keep the Jewish origin of their super-tech on the down low, as they really would.

I generally try to turn off my inner history geek with Wolfentstien, and most games in historical settings for that matter, and to be sure I love the series, especially New Order. It's just that every now and then I can't resist going "That's not accurate!"
