Description
A lucky winner! Two pairs of prizes! The sound of air horns exploded throughout the large department store. It was soon joined by a loud applause and cheers from the store's staff. As confetti rained from the roof, the many customers located near the front of the store all turned their attention to the tall, scruffily-dressed woman standing just in front of the doorway. Her cheeks were bright red from embarrassment.
“Congratulations ma'am” a store employee cheered while clapping her hands. “You've arrived just in time.”
“Just in time for what?” the confused woman asked as she rubbed her tired, brown eyes.
The employee brushed her long purple hair to the side. “Just in time to win our contest silly” she explained with a joyful smile before blowing another air horn in the drowsy woman's face, somehow messing up the already unkempt long brown hair. “You're our one millionth customer!”
As the other employees finally started to finish their applause, the woman let out a low groan. “So much for a quick trip to the store...” she thought while rubbing her brow. “This is why I let Lily do all our shopping.”
“What's your name ma'am?” the employee asked with a warm smile.
“Linda” the woman answered after loudly snorting, seemingly not caring who heard her.
The employee put her arm around the woman and started to lead her deeper into the large building. “Then please Linda” she giggled while pulling the reluctant winner along. “Come with me and claim your prize.”
Linda tried to protest the eager employee, but her pleas fell on deaf ears and the employee's grip was far too strong for Linda to escape. Before she knew it, Linda found herself sitting on a bench in the department store's women's section. “Oh my god...” her mind grumbled while she wiped her hands down her frustrated expression. “I just came here for a new pair of shoes and now I have to deal with this...” Linda looked around for the employee, who had disappeared into another isle after sitting her down a few moments ago. “Should I just go?” After pondering her question for a minute, Linda started to get up.
Suddenly, a shoe box slammed down on the bench next to her and the now startled Linda glanced up to find the employee smiling down at her. It was a pleasant smile, like a mother watching over her small child. Despite that, a chill ran down Linda's spine as she stared up at the employee's bright red eyes that seemed deeper than the darkest of pits.
“Here's your prize Linda” the employee chuckled, pointing to the shoe box. “Or at least it's half of it.”
Curious, Linda opened the shoe box and found a pair of dark purple converse shoes. “Wait, these are mine?” she asked, her eyes drawn to the minus sign sitting on the side of the footwear. “I get to take these home for free?”
“Absolutely” the employee said. “They're on the house.”
Linda raised an eyebrow. “But what if they're not my size?” she asked.
“Well try them on and we'll see” the employee suggested. “If they don't fit, I can always go get you another pair that does.”
“Alright...” Linda sighed as she removed her worn down sneakers from her feet before slipping them into the converse. Despite Linda's expectations, the shoes fit perfectly, not too tight but with just enough grip to stay on her feet. “Wow. That's lucky.”
“Why don't you take a few steps to see how they feel?” the employee suggested as she backed away a little to give Linda some space.
Eager to test her new shoes, Linda sprang to her feet and started to pace back and forth, taking ten whole steps before she was satisfied. “These are really comfy” she said aloud. “It's like having clouds on my-” Linda quickly cut her sentence short when, out of the corner of her eye, she saw a monstrous grin on the employee's face so frightening it made her heart skip a beat. However, when she turned her head to get a good look, the employee's expression looked like a completely normal smile.
“Is something the matter?” the employee asked.
“N-no, it's nothing...” Linda replied. “Just a little surprised at my luck. I came here to buy new shoes and I get them for free.”
The employee's eyes lit up. “Well then you're going to love this” she said before handing Linda another shoe box. “It's the second half of your prize.”
Curious, Linda opened the box and found another pair of converse shoes, these ones bright red and with a plus symbol instead of a minus symbol. “I get these too?” she asked, a little baffled at her luck.
“Of course” the employee giggled. “And don't worry about trying them on. They're the same size as the ones you're wearing.”
“Well thank you” Linda said as she closed the shoe box. “Thank you so much.”
“Don't mention it Linda” the employee said with a smile. “Thank you for coming into our store. We eagerly await your next visit.”
With renewed vigor and an uplifting feeling of joy, Linda hurried out of the department store and jumped into her car, which sat in one of the closest parking spots. However, the second her car disappeared from sight, every employee in the store suddenly stumbled around for a moment, like they'd just been released from invisible shackles.
Standing atop the store, the employee who helped Linda watched the prize winner drive away with a inhumanly wide grin on her face.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fifteen minutes later, Linda pulled into the driveway of her small, lakeside home. It was far from the fanciest house in town and it certainly wasn't the most well kept, but to Linda it was the perfect little retreat. The small lake was encircled by ten homes similar to Linda's. Each one contained either an elderly couple or a quiet individual, meaning the lake was usually always a quiet place. The fact that Linda's house actually belonged to her parents meant rent wasn't an issue, only enhancing her love of the place. Feeling lighter on her feet than usual, Linda skipped toward her front door. After opening her front door, Linda was immediately greeted by another girl holding a plate of sandwiches.
“You're back” the much shorter girl cheered. “How'd it go sis? Did you get your new shoes?”
“Pretty good Lily” Linda chuckled before snatching up one of the sandwiches and stuffing most of it in her mouth. “I actually won them for free.”
Lily's black eyes narrowed. “Finish your food before you talk Linda” she grumbled, causing Linda to suck the rest of the sandwich into her mouth, instantly devouring it. “That's better. Now I can understand you. What did you win?”
Linda lifted her left leg, raising one of her new shoes up to Lily's head. “I won this pair” she answered before lowering her leg and holding out her other shoe box. “And this one too. I was their millionth customer, believe it or not. Not only that, but these fit just right. I never felt such comfort.”
“That's incredible Linda” Lily said with a smile as she watched her older sister strut proudly into the lounge room. “I'm so happy for you. Are you going to take them for a walk around the lake later?”
“Maybe in a bit” Linda replied as she flopped down on the couch. “Right now I've got more important things to do.”
Lily let out a sigh the instant she saw her sister pick up the gaming controller sitting on the coffee table. “You're not going to spend another full Saturday gaming again are you?” she asked in a low grumble.
“Of course” Linda chuckled. “What else would I be doing?”
“I thought we were going to see our niece today” Lily said. “Mom and Dad are going to surprise bro with a visit and I thought we should go too. He'd love to see us again.”
“But that's like an hour's drive away” Linda groaned as she scratched her right breast. “Besides, we've paid bro two surprise visits this month already. He's probably sick of us by now.”
Lily crossed her arms and tilted her head a little. “Come on Linda” she grumbled. “If you don't want to come that's fine. Just please do something a little more social this weekend. How are you ever going to find a boyfriend if you don't get out there? At least make yourself more presentable.”
“Yes mom” Linda snickered. “Look, I'll just beat one level and then I'll go for a walk. Is that alright?”
“I suppose” Lily sighed as she started to eat one of the sandwiches. “But after that we're going to plan a trip to visit bro tomorrow. Trust me, it'll make his day when we show up on his door.”
“I suppose...” Linda grumbled as she rested her legs on the coffee table, making sure her shoes were hanging over the front.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ten completed levels later, a nasty scowl from her little sister forced Linda to pull herself off her couch. “Alright, alright...” she groaned. “I'm going. Just stop looking at me like that.” As Lily's judgmental glare shifted into a pleased smile, Linda stuck out her tongue. “And you're worried about me not finding a boyfriend. You'll scare them all away with a look like that.”
“S-shut up” Lily growled as she ran up to Linda and gave her arm a light thump.
Lily's adorable pouting put a pleased smile on Linda's face. Her little sister always managed to brighten the mood, whether she was trying to or not. “I'll be back soon Lily” she said before giving her sister's head a gentle pat. “Just going for a...” Linda's voice trailed off as she stared at her sister's scrunched up face. Something about it was off. It seemed... Closer than usual. Curious, Linda glanced down, expecting her little sister to be wearing tall heels, only to quickly discover she didn't even have shoes on.
“You okay sis?” Lily asked, having noticed the concerned expression on Linda's face. “Is something wrong?”
“N-no, nothing's wrong” Linda assured as she headed toward her front door. “Anyway, I'm going for a walk. I'll be back soon.”
“Bye” Lily said as she took Linda's place on the couch.
Linda hurried to the sidewalk, only to stop and glance down at her new shoes after taking only a handful of steps. She couldn't quite explain it, but these shoes felt amazing. Every step was like walking on a giant marshmallow, not too soft but just strong enough to support her weight. Whatever her shoes were made of, Linda presumed they would make an amazing mattress. Eager to keep testing them, Linda marched down the street.
The warm sunlight shined down on Linda's face, forcing her to glance downward to give her eyes a moment to adjust. “Man, these shoes are amazing” she thought while maintaining her pace. “They might just turn me into a jogger.” Linda pondered the idea of being the kind of person who got up at dawn just to exercise. Usually, the weekend dawn was her signal to stop playing games and go to sleep. But now, she just might have to change her sleeping schedule to a more standard one.
“Linda dear” a familiar voice called out, causing Linda to spot an elderly lady just ahead of her. “Good afternoon.”
“Good afternoon Mrs. Waterdale” Linda said with a smile as she waved at her neighbor. “How are you today?”
“I'm wonderful dear” Mrs. Waterdale answered, returning Linda's smile with one of her own. “Are you on an errand or just enjoying this beautiful day?”
“The latter” Linda answered while approaching the old woman. “It was such a wonderful day I just couldn't resist.” However, as she got closer, a chilling feeling fell over Linda as she stared at her elderly neighbor. She seemed taller than Linda remembered, significantly taller. Mrs' Waterdale's head usually barely reached Linda's shoulder, but now she was barely a few inches shorter.
Mrs. Waterdale seemed to notice the size difference too. “Have you been eating enough dear?” she asked while adjusting her glasses. “You look, diminished...”
“Y-yes I have...” Linda assured before giving her body a quick look. “At least, I think I have...” With an unknown worry washing over her, Linda turned back the way she came. “I've got to go.”
“Have a lovely day dear” Mrs. Waterdale called out as she watched Linda hurry down the street.
Her heart racing, a worried Linda picked up the pace, eventually moving to jogging. “What's going on?” she thought. “Why do I suddenly feel like I'm falling through the ground?” After looking down just to make sure she wasn't actually sinking, Linda reached her front door. Her worries only increased as she stared up at her door, which was looking just a little taller than usual. In one second, she threw it open and darted inside.
“Back alrea-” was all Lily had time to say before Linda collided with her, knocking both sisters to the floor. Lily was the first to get back up and offer her hand. “Are you okay Linda?” she asked.
After giving her head a few moments to stop spinning, Linda took her sister's hand. “Yeah I'm fine” she muttered, rubbing her eyes as she was pulled back to her feet. “I've just been feeling a little weird today. Like everything seems... A... Little... Bigger...” Linda's voice trailed off as she stared into her little sister's eyes, that were now perfectly level with hers.
“Bigger?” Lily questioned as she raised an eyebrow.
“Y-yeah...” Linda muttered before pushing past her 'little' sister and dashing into her room.
“What's the matter with her?” Lily pondered aloud. Suddenly, an odd idea entered Lily's mind as she pictured her sister's worried face. Lily raised her hand up to her head like she was measuring an imaginary person standing next to her. “Was she...”
A panicked Linda quickly shut her bedroom's door and locked it. “What the...” she muttered while thinking at just how tall her little sister seemed. “What the hell is going on? Did Lily get bigger? No...” In desperate need of confirmation, Linda hurried to her drawer and pulled out one of her shirts. “No I'm... I'm smaller?” she gasped while measuring the shirt against her body, immediately noticing it was now a few sizes too big. Completely flabbergasted at this ludicrous situation, Linda released her shirt and flopped onto her bed. As she started up at her roof, Linda ran through all the possible reasons a person could shrink in her mind. Maybe if she could pinpoint the reason, she could figure out a way to reverse it. Unfortunately, considering shrinking this much was physically impossible, that list of explanations proved to be a short one. “Bah!” she growled. “Come on brain! Think! This started today, so something must have happened in the last few hours.”
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. “Linda, are you alright?” Lily asked, sounding really worried.
Like a zombie rising from the grave, Linda sprang up. “Of course!” she shouted, starling Lily. “It has to be that! That one event that started this!” Linda crossed her arms and glared at her bedroom's door. “Lily put something into her sandwiches that shrinks people” her mind declared with the upmost of certainty, only to immediately realize a large hole in the theory. “But wait, she ate one too and seems to be the same size...” Linda suddenly slammed her fist into her palm. “Of course. She only put it in one sandwich and made sure that one was the closest to me.” Linda nodded. “It all makes sense now. When we were kids, Lily used to go on and on about wanting a little sister. But since mom and dad aren't having anymore, she decided to turn me into one.” Linda's gaze fell upon her new shoes and she sighed. “And to think, I thought today was going to be a good one when I won these...”
Suddenly, the sound of a gong echoed in Linda's ears as a great epiphany manifested itself in her mind. “Or... It's the shoes” she said, feeling a little relieved her sister wasn't some kind of mad scientist capable of impossible feats.

Really? I'll be back in a few minutes...
(One series later)
Well, I stand corrected. That makes Linda target number two. I guess these short stories could be considered a sort of anthology chronicling Pik's size changing adventures in different settings and scenarios and perhaps revealing different facets of Pik's personality, hopefully some of her more positive traits given the results of the first short story.
Anyway a good start to a new short story and good luck on your next chapter.

Pik's positive traits: none whatsoever.
Not that Kip is much better in that regard...
They both might make nice dolls for 's Arienhae, though.

Yyyeah, after learning more about Pik's personality and aspirations, you make an excellent point Detective-Barricade. She is certainly a woman one must tread lightly with. But playing devil's advocate, while the two sisters are very similar in many ways, Kip is better than you might think. For unlike Pik she has, as bizarre as this might sound, a code of ethics.
From what I have observed, Kip always respects the rules of her games and does not allow her chosen targets to die. She will put them in danger most certainly, but she will ensure that her targets stay alive and will make amends should her antics go too far. In addition, she always allows her targets a choice before she does anything to them. Thus their decisions and all the joys and consequences that come with them are of their own making. All Kip does is present them the option, Jane being a prime example of this. One final note of interest is that Kip's bouts of mischief always lead to a positive result in the long run. Think about it, would Cindy have been able to progress her relationship with Leo so quickly if he was not shrunken? Or would have Jane been able to make so many wonderful friends and touched so many people's lives if she had not signed that piece of paper? Thus by accident or design, Kip enriched their lives and made them better people as a result, even if the two would wholeheartedly deny such a claim.
Admittedly she may have been very much like Pik in the past but with her newfound family life. She has the chance to enrich her own life under the watchful care of a loving mother and a firm but caring father. And while Pik is certainly a tougher case than her, deep down all she really wants is to be like her big sister and create great stories even if her methodology requires some work. Perhaps the whims of fate will provide you with the opportunity to expand her horizons just as it did for Kip but perhaps such thoughts are in due part to my optimistic views.
I apologise for rambling on so much and hope my words were at least a little interesting. I bid you good evening and wish you good fortune in your next endeavour.
p.s
This may be a stupid question but who on earth is Arienhae? I don't believe I have encountered that name before but she certainly sounds powerful if she can make playthings out of 2 reality warping outer gods.

"choice" is a very loose term with Kip. I don't recall Leo being asked anything that might lead to him being shrunk every night until morning. Jane was very much silently goaded into signing that letter leading her into the world she finds herself in currently.
Arienhae is 's creator goddess character, whose sneezes can have very radical affects on reality as my character Molly can attest. She's very much a ditzy airhead, but has a certain fondness for turning others into dolls at times. (she's especially fond of turning Megan into a doll) She's also the mother of Hailey, Samarkana's often fluctuating in size but always giant demigoddess who tends to inadvertently cause some girls in her presence to grow giant. You should totally read more of 's stories to learn more.

That is certainly true. she is very much like the Djinn from Wishmaster in that regard, granting the wishes of others but in ways that would never expect and using cunning and trickery to lead to her desired result. Such was the case with Leo as it was Cindy who made the choice and Leo's situation was Kip's chosen method to grant her wish.
Anyway, I am off to pay a little visit to Samarkana and learn a little more about this airhead of a goddess. Thank you for this most engaging conversation but alas I have a few university deadlines for next week and thus I must bid you a good day, for now.
Thank you for your time and hope you have a lovely day.
