Description
Last labour guys! We did it, all the labours are completed!
As his last labour Hercules was sent by king Eurystheus to complete one last task: to capture Cerberus, the fearsome three-headed dog of Hades!
According to the myth Hercules was helped by Athena and Hermes along the way, then he entered Cerberus' lair, which was also the entrance to the Underworld.
Once inside, the hero met Hades who told him that he could take Cerberus on one condition: he would've had to conquer its rage without using any sort of weapon.
Some versions of the myth say that he strangled the dog by wrapping the Nemean lion's flesh around its neck.
Since that seemed too gruesome to draw I simply decided to make Hercules overcome Cerberus' fury by using a big steak (and it's more funny, too). Took some liberty there.
Once the Hero returned to Eurystheus with the dog he was finally recognised by both gods and mortals to be the biggest hero of all Greece! It was about time!
I wanted to pick an existing dog race, to depict cerberus, even though it is a fantasy creature. During my research, I stumbled upon a particular race that was often used in ancient Greece. I found out about these big dogs called "Molossus" who were very famous for their strength and size; they were used to throw the enemies off their horses, after all. ô_ô
They were similar to Neapolitan Mastiffs or to Corso dogs, so this is the look I gave Cerberus, in the end.
Hope you like this oversized puppy!
Now, let's give Hercules some time to rest, he deserved it. XD
I've put the Watermark because I want to mantain the exclusive right on this artwork. If I get the chance, I'd really like to publish it and the other 11 in a book.

I've always seen Cerberus as big softy like most dogs, once you get to know him (them?).

That wouldn't' make sense, why would he strangle it to death if his job was to capture it alive, I think Hercules did kill Cerberu's brother Orthus by beating it to death

I didn't say he strangled him to death; according to Aristophanes, he held Cerberus in a stranglehold until the dog submitted to him. Though, there are many versions of the story and this is just one of them. Some tell that Cerberus was donated by Persephone to Hercules, some depict Hercules using his club to beat Cerberus, even though he wasn't allowed to use any weapons, and so on...

Yeah, I think that would be a better choice than strangling. At least Hades knows his pet dog is not hurt.

This is fantastic, I love how you researched the breed of dog (I'm going to look them up too, that's no mean feat pulling a rider from a horse!) and I hope you let us all know here when you publish it in a book. I wannit! This would tickle my entire family's funny bone. Awesome work!

Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed the series!
The book will come out eventually, since I'm gonna self-publish it, slowly but surely. I'm happy to hear you'd be interested in that. ^^
