Description
Miyu woke up just like she did every morning: bright and early. It was a weekend, though, so she thought perhaps she could stay in bed for a while longer, where it was cozy and warm. It wasn't really like she had anything in particular to do today until lunch time, when she would help her grandmother and cousin make lunch.Since she had time, she could contemplate certain things that had been bothering her lately. While she and her cousin had been helping their grandmother with her little stall in the market on weekdays, she much preferred learning from her grandfather at home. He was happy to accommodate her, but she was very aware that until now, none of the women in her family had become private investigators like the men did. Her mother was the exception, but her father had met her in his line of work. She hadn't grown up in this family, and she'd left after Miyu's father died.
Miyu herself was happy to be able to enjoy her grandfather's company and tutelage, though. He was a very smart man, even if he was a bit standoffish at times. It was obvious that he cared for her, but he was a bit old-fashioned and consistently pushed her towards manning the family's stall even if he continued to teach her the family's trade of investigating skills. She brushed it off, but it bothered her, perhaps more than it should have. Something about it, beyond it being about the women of her family not becoming investigators, rubbed her the wrong way.
Her plans for a relaxed morning resting her eyes and pondering her current state of affairs were interrupted, however, by a very familiar voice breaking into her thoughts. "Miyu! Grandma wants to know if you're coming down for breakfast. You awake?"
"I am now." Miyu sat up, rubbing sleep from her eyes before looking over at her cousin. "Good morning, Percy."
"Morning, Miyu!" Terpsichore had a big grin on her face, resting herself on the edge of Miyu's futon. "How'd you sleep? Gonna come down to eat?"
"I slept just fine," Miyu responded. She got up and stretched out the rest of her sleepiness from her body before shaking herself out and turning her gaze back to Percy. "I'll go down to eat, yes. I wouldn't want grandmother's hard work and good food to go to waste."
"You'd be better at cooking too if you spent more time helping us," Percy said pointedly as she hopped to her feet.
Before she could beckon Miyu to follow her, she said bluntly, "That doesn't seem to assist your own cooking prowess."
Percy looked taken aback before she gave Miyu a stern pout. "That's just not true! I think you just don't understand my taste. Spicy foods are a mature flavor that you just don't get."
"Frist of all, I'm not sure how you still have a sense of taste with all of that spice you consume," Miyu chuckled. "Secondly, with your magic quirk I am very surprised that you can withstand spice. Sneezing clouds of frost is not intuitively conducive to the consumption of hot foods, though I suppose it may cancel out."
"At least I don't overheat and faint when I get stressed," Percy huffed, following Miyu out of the room.
"My fragility in regards to my magic quirk has at least given me reason to learn to be more composed." Miyu stopped by the washroom to look in the mirror and straighten out her short fur a bit before going downstairs. It was sleeker than Percy's silky fluff, and because of it did not require as much daily maintenance, but she still wanted to look nice so she didn't have to endure her grandmother's scolding. "Composure is a very useful skill in all walks of life."
"Like when the kids at school say mean things?"
Miyu paused, not looking away from her reflection as she took the time to formulate an answer. "Yes, I suppose so," she finally said flatly, frowning. "You've heard them, then."
"Hard not to." Percy seemed apologetic when Miyu finally spared her a glance. "I know I talk to other wynglings when we go to school, but I usually try to stick with you. Why do you let them be so mean?"
"It doesn't bother me as much as it might some others," Miyu sighed, hopping down from the steps the two of them had to use to reach the mirror. "It is... trivial, compared to other things. I can take the harshness of their words, especially considering many of them are redirecting anger due to their own difficulties and insecurities."
Percy still looked bothered, but she didn't press further. It wasn't like her to address difficult topics, anyway. At the end of the day, Miyu really didn't care about what others said, but the apathy towards their negativity might have bothered some people in itself. Percy was the type to care about what others thought of her, but Miyu's only concerns when it came to others' opinions were with critical thinking and problem solving. It was not Miyu's job to give two shits about what the nooklings thought of her or her family, and at least part of Percy's problem with them probably laid in the fact that it was Miyu's family that was often the target of their teasing, not that they would say those things to Percy. She was far too popular for that.
She sank into her usual seat at the table for breakfast and listened to her grandmother and Percy talk about what they were going to prepare for their market stall next week. She knew that she would get roped into preparations, but she didn't mind. Since she was up early anyhow, she could probably get away with excusing herself early to study with her grandfather. Today, like all days, would fall victim to routine, but at least Miyu could learn something and spend time with her family, and she never minded that at all.
