Description Done! Luckily I finished this before finals - or else the project may have dragged on through the summer. The planning and the sketching is always the easy part - that occured almost 8 months ago. The details are always difficult - especially the skirt and embroidery - which didn't turn out to my liking - but look ok. The armor was also a pain because each individual plate had to be texturized etc. So the lighting is a little muddled - but there aren't any blatant contraditions to nature.

Please visit the website if you're interested in prints.

This was suppose to be a start in a series of opera paintings. One of "Rusalka" is aready in the works. I'm also thinking of a "La Traviata" and a "Magic Flute" -- however, I never finish large multi-piece projects that I start -- mostly because classes/job get in the way.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the story of "Turandot" - it is an opera by Puccini of the same name. It is the story of Calaf, a foreign prince, who comes to the Forbidden City to win the hand of Princess Turandot. Any suitor who wishes to marry her must answer three riddles and if he fails, he is executed. Countless before have died in this fashion, drawing out Turandot's bloody reign which is only ended at the end of the story by Calaf's love.

This particular painting I left rather emotionless -- it's purpose is more to showcase the costumes and the colors.

This is beautiful. Thanks for doing Turandot. For my final project for my opera history class, I have to design an entire opera production -- sets, costumes, props, everything. I'm glad you did this. It's a bit of inspiration. What did you use as inspirations for their costumes? I'm especially interested in her headpiece and his costume.

wow. wow. wow! this is good. very good. the amount of work you put into this is very evident. it's like watching the opera all over again. the lighting on the male is a little lacking though, but then you already pointed that out. but wow. did you use oil paints?

I love your work, truly. I've been a fan for a couple of years now, having bookmarked your site so far back I can't remember when I did. You used to be a Phantom of the Opera fan; I think that's how I stumbled upon musegallery... that was when the entrance page still had the lady in the lilac gown on top of the stairs of the Palais Garnier. Hahaha, sorry for the rambling!

But I really love your attention to detail... just a glance at the "Death and the Maiden(?)" piece screams hours and hours of work and burnt retinas Your detail in the architecture (for several other pieces as well) is awesome. Anyhow, I really hope you find the time to continue that current piece(s) you're working on.

I think making a lack of emotion in the characters was very effective. She certainly looks the part of the pampered, spoiled, emotionless princess, while he is looking adoringly at her, but there is a kind of cold calculation to his manner as well. I especially like Turandot's headdress. Operas make excellent subjects for this kind of art.

Looks almost exactly like (or how it's typically depicted/portrayed) the characters out of the opera itself. Calaf looks proper but Turandot hmm not a negative comment but I feel abit strange having her look straight at the artist . This looks like a post-script picture mmm there would be a little more romantic feel if she was returning the look Calaf gives her. But then again if she does that we wouldn't be able to see the wonderful fine detail of her headpiece!

I love how you did the curtain backdrop and the lower half of Turandot's dress. Texture and feel simply reaches out

You know, this is the very first piece of art I've seen that involved a guy with a beard. XD Congratulations.

This is absolutely fabulous. I rarely ever comment on anything that isn't anime/manga style, but I couldn't resist the thumbnail in the devART featured section. The colors compliment each other perfectly, and the way the clothes are styled is absolutely beautiful... I love the woman, she's gorgeous. Especially that ornate headpiece. There seems to be a very "Greek sculpture" flavor to this piece. All in all, I give it a thumbs up. ^^
