Description This image could be viewed as comical, if you like...i was gonna name it STFU& TATK (&and throw away the key), but i actually view it as more of an allegory....

Imagine all those in the world that cannot speak freely...Imagine not being able to speak freely about political views, individuals in power, the weaknesses in the system that is supposed to protect and nuture you, the crimes against human rights commited against you and your the ones you love. Can you imagine?
In Vietnam, our guides were afraid to speak about the government, for fear of persecution...
Imagine the fear.
Imagine being imprisioned by the silence.

i see nothin' comical in this shot...
on the contrary is tragic as, then, i read on the rest of description.
You're description's words are very nice, a very nice conceptual shot, i like it so much. clap clap.

I truly appreciate what you're trying to say, but all I could think when I saw the shot was, wow.. damn creepy mime is right where he belongs. Gah.. mimes scare me, along with lawn gnomes and clowns. Creepy creepy. Nice job though!

Isn't that also what mime is all about?
trying to show as much as possible with no words, only with expressions and emotions - silence.
I "like" his sad expression, it looks like he's helpless and wainting for what's comming, waiting for someone to free him, give him some love and to finally give him a voice, dunno...
maybe just rambling here

Steve

I don't see it comical. except the MIM is actually behind REAL BARS. this is sad in some aspects, but it's nice in others! excellent shot

Marvelous expression! I always love how your images can be taken in different ways but I like the description for this-- really fits well. The way the vertical lines contrast with the horizontal ones is great too-- great work my friend

Silenced and imprisoned.
Definitely a good representation of the issue regarding freedom of speech.

I live in Indonesia which until just a few years ago was run by the Dictator Suharto.
Free press didn't exist, political opponents locked up and opposers of the government jailed.
I'm positive that free speech and press needs to be present, but the inability of the democratic government
here to take action against opponents of the state system is beginning to be appaling. Already it has cost over
300 lives from the Marriott and Bali bombings, both in which friends passed away.
Personally although I fight for human rights, I believe the system under Suharto, sans the censored press, was a lot
more efficient in preventing any fighting back. Opposition of the government was unheard of. Now it's anarchic.
People do whatever they want...

Oh well, I'm outta here in 3 months. But I'll miss the damn place like hell.

(Sorry for the rambling, the image just inspired me to think)

I always love the way you can throw in something political or at least something deeper and more meaningful into your pictures than just a simple image. I saw this and I thought "heh, I get it. He's a mime... he doesn't speak and he's being thrown in jail - silenced" So yeah I saw some slight humour, but I definitely saw an underlying meaning and message. It's almost ironic that one who can not even speak out is being taken away and thrown into jail. It's like taking a "protective measure" before anything even happened... or like declawing a wild cat, even though there is nothing for it to ruin with it's claws. This is absolutely, hands down, brilliant work. amazing.

i think this is amazing..
i feel like this all the time.. i'm closet anxiety person..
sometimes it's very hard for me to speak within a group of people i don't know.. just for that first second before i meet all of them. but that second to me is a life time..
same thing with talk on the phone.. so this piece mean a lot to me..

amazing job

I have a particular fascination with mimes...

Due to that I can't help viewing this image in the comical...which I am directing others to...

Though it's a personal reference, a group of us had a "Loud Mime" night at the burning man festival last year...so for your amusement:

This picture evoques a very powerful emotion, and to me is not comical. To me a mime is the personification of pure sadness, and the whole concept of enclosure is very melancholial and reflective. It is amazing how you portrait such complicated feelings into photography. I admire that a lot.

I like mimes

It's sad what goes on in the world.. and the silencing that goes on after it.. If only people could speak their minds, and free themselves of the mess

But aren't mimes always locked up in boxes?

The redundant nature of a mute, barred from free speech, did seem funny at first.

But then your description... poignant to say the least.
