Meanwhile, actress Angelina Jolie recieves a tattoo by a famous artist that same week because she was so "impressed" by the country. How can people just sit by and do nothing?

A sad story indeed...

Contrary to most of the comments on here, i don't like this picture. There is nothing special about it, it's just a picture of a couple kids. As for the look of "despair" on her face, I don't see it....she could be thinking of something, or somewhat squinting at something, the look on her face is ambiguous, and FAR from hopeless despair. She doesn't even look upset....i think it is an average photo, with a less than interesting subject matter. The photo doesn't give off anything other than "hey, look, i'm holding a thing." It stirs no emotions at all, and isn't very pretty to look at.

No words I Know can epress theease feelings my heart withholds in my soul,but...I must say at least one thing: She is butiful......not by her looks.......but by she is standing her ground as it withers away by that mighty ocean of life, holding that child in her arms, that child is the uplifting of her spirit-and her only love,by holding on to her,she keeps what little hope she has-and her only meaning.

I find it scary in a way, how beautiful this photo is. It could almost be a studio shot, with the composition as it is, the blackness at the top of the background disappearing into her hair, and the ground matching the clothing, with the lighting quite right as well.
So it is Scary to me to look at such a subject and find something beautiful in it that resonates with me. I didn't get so much a feeling of hopelessness here. Pain, Mistrust, Anger perhaps: but also Strength, Will, and Determination. She is certainly not at the end...yet. Those hands are so aged, must have done a great deal of work for a child so young.
It is quite a moment that will live with me for a good long time.

Amazing capture! It's the type of photo that doesn't need a description, it speaks for itself.
The fact that this is reality makes me feel sad, angry and helpless. But I'm glad you chose to submit it...
And it really deserves a +fav too...

holy shit man you dumb "soft, fruity" faggots... realize that combodians did not come up with any cures or ANY advancements in science or medicine or do anything for the world... i really don't understand why we HAVE to go and help them WHY... it's the right thing to do fuck you... if over soo much time the past prob thousand years there have been sooooo many people saying what you are all saying why the fuck are there still poor people, sick people and people getting bombed... you didn't kill them right.. you want peace... chaos is peace and peace is chaos love is hate and most importantly life is death let nature do it's job of killing off the sick and weak it would be a much more organized and peacefull world if everyone stopped trying to stop nature of doing its job...
p.s. i never even once said anything about inflicting harm on anybody or killing people or anything along the lines of causing violence...

I know what you mean.
This child is going to die soon day so they stop giving him clothes, food and they don't even give him a matress
Like everybody else I think it is a sad thing but remember that as photographers, it is our job to change something about it by showing people an image that shows what they're living with without they know it.
thanx for sharing this photo Lorrain and congrats on the daily deviation.
have a nice day.

A powerful photo..... It bring me tears to see it. I'm Cambodian American and I know my parents and my family deal in Cambodia. They were poor and hungry and they have to work hard. When the Communist (Khmer Rouge) came and kill everybody.... back in the 70's....i think... I'm happy that my family escape that terror and came to the U.S to became a U.S citzen. Now today we're wealthy but I know I have a lot of family in Cambodia still poor and hungry.
I like this photo because it bring me emotion and make you think in the world. It also my fellow Cambodian people living. Most of them are poor.
Great work!

Some people exist simply so that the more fortunate can live upon their shoulders, it's sad, but that's the way it works...
Anyways if it weren't for constant internal struggle in 3rd world countries, most of these people wouldn't be starving, don't fell bad for being fortunate, feel lucky, and make use of it.

This picture is amazing
and like a lot of people have said i think it does say a lot about the current situation of the world
but i think the comments other people have made say just as much
there seem to be a lot of people who want to bury their heads in the sand to this or say how sad it is that nothing can be done
it's kind of scary
maybe nothing can be done for that little girl or the baby
but just as sad as the photo is the fact that so many people seem ready to give up on the world or accept this is the way it has to be well done on the photo it is very good technically and emotionally
thankyou for it

Many people die every day, the Earths ozone is being depleted by pollution we put into the air, oil spills and deforestation kill thousands of animals, large numbers of people are homeless in the United States, people are murdered, people are raped, people kill animals, people have no food, people have no families, people have no one. These things are all happening every day and I dont deny them, but I dont make my own life drag to feel sorry for them. I have enough problems of my own. This piece has a well placed, yet all too well-known message for me. You want to see pure depression melancholic sadness on a daily basis? You dont have to go to another country. Just watch the news
_____
All this is true, and you ought not to let sad things drag down your life. However, I doubt it ever hurt anyone to show a little compassion and humility. Even if you can't donate a bunch of money to charity or fly down to Cambodia and hug the children in your arms... even if you feel you can't make a difference at all. To just pause for a moment and reflect on some of the sad circumstances that others must endure is admirable I think. Some people do need to be reminded that such situations exist in the world, if for no other reason than to better understand their own existance in this vast colletcion of humanity.
Simply because we cannot solve all the ills in the world is no reason to spurn feelings of compassion and ignore those in need of our help.

to say i like this photograph is almost sadistic. it's very sad. if i were queen of the world i would take every starving poverished child and envelope them with everything! i just want to hold that baby and hug that little girl. i dont know how to comment on an artistic level, and i realize that lately a lot of deviants are getting sick of same old shallow comments. but im speaking from my heart which is what art is supposed to be about. i can't see why this photo would be better in black and white. perhaps because the reality of the color version is too much for certain people to handle. perhaps if it were in b&w it would be easier for them to swallow. you know? like a tabloid photo. this is worthy of so much more. the color makes it real. if people can't handle reality then they need not look. let them stay in their black and white world. they are the ostriches that bury their heads in the dirt. this photo breaks my heart. i have three children here in my home, a 3 year old and a set of 8 month old identical twins. the mother in me wants to diaper that baby and give him a bottle of milk and feed that little girl some oreos and let her watch disney movies with my 3 year old. that's the american in me. the human soul in me wants to love them immensely. thank you for reminding me of my gifts here. thank you for showing me what it could be like, and what it is like in places i've never seen. you're a master!!
awesome work!

i cannot even begin to express , the beauty that comes from this photo
you have managed to capture a sight that the world tries to hide behind car commercials and fast food restaraunts (if that makes sense)
this is the world that nobody allows you to see
because it never effects you personally
i truely stunning piece
after seeing it.. it really nmakes me want to sponser a child.
such beautiful work.
