Description While visiting a temple in Vietnam, I caught a glance of this man, teaching, praying and smiling all the while, despite goofy tourists everywhere. The power of a smile is almost unparalled.

I know that most people do not really appreciate this type work on DA (i hope more people subit photojournalism), but i would like people to get a chance to see some of my street portraiture...i think it is the most profound type of photography...it opens the mind to the similarities in people.

Thank you.

it's a pity, there's not so much photojournalism around here.
in my opinion it's the most interesting thing one can do with a camera.

Street photography is not only one of the finest kinds of photography, but it's also one of the most difficult ones for the photographer to shoot. You've really caught the essence of photojournalism in this one imo.

I really like the old man We don't have old men sitting around, smiling like that in the busy Western world, do we?

On the contrary, the response to this photograph seems to bely your statement, and I can easily see why.
I love photojournalism...in some ways, more than the contrived pose portraits. They capture a moment in time - real life, as it is, and ever so often you come acoss a subject like this, with a smile like his, and you can't resist a second look.

This is wonderful, Lorraine...I hope you submit more in this thread.

I you look at the number of favs I would say that a lot of people here like photojournalism A lovely picture with a great composition. His slight angle is adding some depth into the image since the wall behind continues out of frame. The sepia color tone is adding a sense of old age and fits perfectly here.

A top notch photo as allways Lorraine

"i think it is the most profound type of photography...it opens the mind to the similarities in people."

I couldn't agree with you more

Your words a very true. Very few people here appreciate photo journalistic shots.

The capture is priceless and REAL! It captures the pure joy of laughter and a real smile! That has no boundaries or is not unique to a single type of person. I am a great believer in capturing simple moments and emotions! Not perfect technical shots. I noticed that some have said that this submission is a little blurry! I think they missed the point of this.

Wonderful capture of a true simple moment!

The colour fits the man and the feeling very well. His smile is very beautiful, thank you for showing it to us. I have read a little about buddishm, and I know that smiling is one of the most important things to do to reach full enlightment. By smiling, you are able to spread around the very positive feeling as this man is and you achieve an inner piece, which overcomes the dark thoughts of any present time.
The book I read was Being Peace by Thich Nhat Hanh, and I highly recommend it if this man makes you smile.

i have to agree with aeon.. about people submitting what they wish.. i'm still finding my themes and the type of photography i'd like to work with, so i'm pretty eccletic at this point.. anything from nature, to long exposure, to even some recent photojournallism (which you may want to take a look at).. each person sees art in their own way, afterall everything lies in perceptioin.. and each person takes something different away from each piece they encouter.. it is not the end product that is important, it is the process we as artists go through.. it is the journey not a means to an end.. enjoy, live life, create.. later days

Fabulous piece.Looks as though it is the type of face I often gravitate to in my work.I seem to focus in on eyes and facial characteristics, which show life in candid shots.Vey nice work and I agree, photo journalism is indeed a very important art form which then becomes an historical piece of documentation.Great work.Jude

There is something special about this photo, I just can't quite put my finger on it though. He seems so happy and carefree. I sit here looking at the picture over and over, wondering the same kind of question: What kind of life does he live? His happiness is captivating but also mysterious.

Wonderful job. It has such a simple and natural atmosphere to it that is rarely seen these days.
