My take is that it's the embodiment of death looking over someone who is bedridden, this person is dying. So death waits for them. But while they're waiting two people come to visit the bedridden person. Maybe their children, or grandchildren, perhaps even friends? Death looks over them. what is death feeling? Loneliness?
Maybe he feels nothing at all, we just don't know. I see a being that will never know love or tenderness like these people. "The gods envy us, they want when we have." But I could say it's the same for us, We want what they have.
Maybe there really is nothing greater than love.
The man passes away shortly after, content with life and walking towards death.
