Description "Lady Turquoise of Gemworld - Spell Casting"
Watercolors & acrylic-based india ink
July 2009

Lady Turquoise from the DC comic series "Amethyst Princess of Gemworld"...I had quite a lot of fun on this one, as it is my first finished work in years - tho I found myself to be a tad rusty ^_^ Overall, I'm happy with the outcome & hope all of you Gemworld fans kinda like it too

Note: The image is actually 2 scans put together...I was able to align it for the most part...

Final note: The sketch of Turquoise was the last thing I drew when my mom was still alive...this finished piece is lovingly dedicated to her.

This is an incredibly gorgeous piece & LT has so little art, making this even more special.
And what a lovely way to remember your mother.

Thank you - I am actually the most proud of this piece myself, of everything I have done...It's amazing the things that one can do when they are inspired by someone who will never have a chance to see it...

Ah, wonderful! I always loved Turquoise's colors, her attitude and everything. All the little details, the brooch, the swirling lines- very Colon Gemworld! I bet your mom loved it too.<

Turquoise was always such a great character - Had the series been given more time, I think she might have become more popular than Amethyst herself!! Ah well...now to see what DC has planned in one month's time...
Thanks so much for commenting, it's always great to hear from another Amethyst fan!!

your mother would tell you she is proud. this is better than the professionals. lines, subtle, color, real + eye catching, composition, wonderful and interesting. her clothes clash deliciously with her smooth form, making them look more textured simply by comparison. the look on her face makes me like her, very human, very deep and complex character. your shading/tint of her energy contains rhythm of movement.

Wow, thank you so much for the kind words & for the !! This piece really means a lot to me, and it's so wonderful beyond words to receive such fantastic feedback

a few things. first, you deserved every word of it. second, it's a flippin honor for such an artist to talk with me. third, i'm glad the feedback was good; saying nice things is important, but so is telling the details of why a piece works or doesn't. i'm glad i accomplished that.
and i sympathize with you (i haven't lost a mom, but i have lost a few loved ones, including a very close uncle i will dedicate my first book to). but, in spite of things, you're doing exactly what your mother would want, and you're doin it with flying colors! is there much work for comics in Canada?

Sadly, I'm not a professional yet - I've only had one piece published - but who knows, maybe one day
To be honest, I'm not all that familiar with the Canadian comic scene...I only got back into reading comics (after an approximate 15 year hiatus) a couple of years ago & didn't really draw seriously for quite some time...I'm really rusty!!
I'm slowly trying to find out some more info about the field, tho

oh, it's good to research. im studying the Novel and Short Story Writer's Market for 3 hours (i got to the J's).

well, maybe you could look in American industry, evil as we are.

but, if this is your rusty- sheesh. i think the "good" stuff will have to be kept in the Arc of the Covenant.

Never heard of the series but I like the look of this character. The outfit is different from your traditional magic making figure. A great job!

Love this. It also takes me back to my own memories of Turquoise. I remember when I first read about her, it was when she was pursing Topaz, and I hated her for stealing him away from Amy. But then I read back issues and realizes that she'd never intended to steal anything from anyone, that she'd actually looked forward to being Amethyst's friend and restoring her throne. Quite a character, that one. ^_^

Agreed!! I remember as a kid I was SOOOOO mad when I saw her showing off her lovely dress & figure to Topaz in the anuual...all these years later, I now own the original art page ^_^ I've always wished they would have done more with Turquoise, especially in battle & such

It took some re-reading for me to get just how long Amy had been gone. *envies your art-page* Even after I understood, it was still so frustrating. It seemed like she had to choose between her gemworld family and real-world family because of the passage of time issue. It struck me as kind of funny that the only person who could really understand that annoyance was Carnelian.

Thanks so much!! I was originally going to do lots of shiny metal, but I think I have to practice a little more first
