Mekronid • wow, thanks so much for taking such a thoughtful look at the work. i appreciate your thoughts! i don't have many people say that my work is something that they 'keep coming back to'. so, that fact that you do is humbling praise.
this was the first personal, un-commisioned work i'd done in a while. since it's something that just came from a personal experience, and, is resonating with others feels like the best validation. and, it's not in a gallery in france (yet!) but it did get selected for the Spectrum 25 annual to be printed later this year. if you're not familiar with the book, it offers a broad selection of excellent imagery from mostly the sci•fi / fantasy publishing and entertainment industries every year. there's fantastic work in each edition and to be included amongst that caliber of hard work and talent is yet another humbling event.
i appreciate your notes on the background, too - for letting me know how the image comes across and how it appears to others.
again, thanks for leaving such a lengthy and thoughtful comment. it's making connections and knowing as much from such responses as yours that keep alive the image-making fire.

I keep coming back to look at this piece. It's got that ineffable sense of humanity being put on display that is so common among the most revered works in human history. The viewer is drawn by its intracacies before they can even make judgements about the content. It may not be painted on walls or extolled by art critics in France, but I could see this used as an artistic representation of the past, or an example of avant garde art, in a book printed a century from today.
Personally, I'm not really a fan of the cross-stitch patterning, but I see it provides a counterpattern to the flat stitch backdrop. I'm forced to wonder if without these contrasting patterns the foci would become too defined or obscured relative to the art style. Can't make an objective comment on that because it's such a central facet of the work's individualism. Anyway, this is an excellent composition.
