I will be pencilling and inking FOUR alternate covers for IDW's new mini-series, MARS ATTACKS JUDGE DREDD! These collector covers will interlock to create one large poster image. Colors on these covers are being done by my pal, Steve Downer ! These have been a blast to work on, and I'm having a great time creating them, so I hope you'll support me by picking up copies of MARS ATTACKS JUDGE DREDD that feature my covers! If you're not into alternate covers, "Gorgeous" Greg Staples is painting up the regular covers, so you really can't go wrong!

Here's a look at the the alternate cover for MARS ATTACKS JUDGE DREDD #1! It features a tip of the hat to the original Topps MARS ATTACKS card series from 1962. I came up with a totally new card, but I tried to stay true to the classic fun theme of the original card series. The outer space star pattern was created by first putting down a layer of SuperBlack India Ink, and then masking off the other artwork elements with Scotch 3M Removable Tape. I cut out the tape carefully using an x-acto knife, and then I dipped an old toothbrush into a bottle of Pelikan Graphic White paint, soaking the bristles. I (carefully) flicked the paint-soaked bristles with my thumb, sending spatters of paint through the air and onto the board, creating white speckles (stars). It is a classic, traditional technique for creating BWS (AKA: Black With Stars) in comics. It's a very cool effect, and what you see here is exactly what's on the original artwork! I learned to do this technique many years ago at the JOE KUBERT SCHOOL OF ART. The line work on the card, Earth, spaceships and the Moon were done using B pencils, SpeedBall SuperBlack India Ink and a Sharff 3000 series #3 inking brush.
