Description I wanted to do something reminiscent of the formal portraits that English monarchs had made, symbolism and all.

Characters from Megan Whalen Turner's Queen's Thief series.

A questions for those of you viewing this piece: should I color this?

EDITED: I colored it anyway.

EDITED: Fixed the colors again. I'm done now.

i've looked at every single picture on this site relating to Gen, and such, and this one is amazing! i'm like in tears going hysterical, just looking at all these. i get a little bit worked up over really good books. the King of Attolia is my favorite book ever, so great job! and you definitely made it look like an old monarchy painting

For some reason I burst into tears when I saw Eugenides hiding his hand. Do I love these books too much? Yes. Yes I do.
Great work; I can't stress enough how much I love this pose, and the look on Gen's face. And the symbolism
By the way, what medium is this? It looks like oil pastels maybe, but I really can't tell.

Haha, it's hard to find anyone who's read these books and didn't like them.

Thanks! I tried to incorporate symbolism in it like more formal portraits of monarchs used to have. I'm glad you caught on with it. It was my favorite part.

This is a graphite pencil drawing that I scanned and colored digitally. I wish I knew how to use oil pastels, but I guess tricking people into thinking I'm using them is the next best thing.

Thanks! I just made the outfits up as I went along, so I'm glad it doesn't look too weird.

I'm wondering if you're going for the Napolean look or if you just don't want to draw his hook. X] Freaking awesome anyway! You're getting so awesome.

Nope. I'm more than willing to draw it. I just thought it was cool and symbolic this way.

I had already started coloring before I even posted the first version. I was just asking for the heck of it. I would have colored it either way.

Good choice to color it LostThyme. I liked the drawing but the coloring brings it up another level.

Thanks! I think I'm still going to have to a little bit more editing on the color though.

I'd say you got the style down. You even got the guy sticking his hand into his shirt, Napoleon-style.

Will couliuerng wourk out with all of that pencil shading?

LostThyme In reply to htilden42 [2010-05-19 02:40:04 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I thought of Napoleon when I drew it like that. You would have to read the books to find out what he's hiding under his jacket though.

I think I could make the coloring work. It would be an experiment, but I've uploaded stuff like this that has been colored before. Just not at this scale.

My question is the same as Shinkansen's.

And my answer is the same that I gave to Shinkansen. Ignore the fact that this isn't my normal mostly clean lineart. Would you be interested in seeing a color version?
