Description The original concept for this vehicle was on display at the British Motor Show in 1996... for the future cars section. Students at Coventry University came up with the design. My model is a little different but the idea is the same.

The vehicle is powered by electric motors which can be recharged while it is on the move – perhaps by roadside senders in much the same way that a train receives current. But there are no wheels! The propulsion, suspension, steering and braking is the responsibility of a mysterious malleable, muscular material that does not yet exist. There’s also no driver… navigation is computer controlled and safe travel relies on roadside sensors.

Oh… and yes the environment looks totally unrealistic, but I wanted to get this piece done fairly quickly (1 day modelling, 1 day compositing )… so I just whipped up something simple. I think it does quite well to balance things out though.

Ahhh yes - I remember this being on the news. It was described something like a "Snail" from what I can remember.
Quite an idea those Students cooked up - Seems we're still no where near anything like this though

Nice re-creation/modification you've done though! Great job on the body, and the regardless of what you think about the background - It looks fine

Whoa, I can't believe it, I saw this car, or something VERY similar to it, in a Popular Science/Mechanincs magazine (can't remember which one) in like 1998.

According to them, it would have some sort of digital paint or something to that extent that would actively change colour according to its surroundings. It was supposed to be in production by this year. Just another example of how much humans overestimate themselves, I guess.

wow this is very cool, i remember seeing a vehicle very similar in a book called how things work and it was in the futuristic transport section, very similar but i suppose theres loads of designs like that all over...great work!

I like this one better. The one at the show had weird curly bits that looked like they'd catch on something. And the black-silver colour scheme was too common. This one makes it look better.

hey .. nice work... i saw that show too... the vehicle moves because of a certain kind of rubber that vibrates due to some motors.. the whole concept is from a snail - how it 'wiggles' its lower body to move forward.. only here it'll be much much faster... i'm still waitin for them to actually demo the prototype... .. anyways.. cool work!
