Description This isn't so much of a tutorial as it is a fact sheet.

Now that I know all of this information and made a few expensive mistakes concerning them, I thought it would be a nice gesture to share this information with the world.

To make an animation cel you need cellulose acetate. It is sold in sheets or rolls, and the main distributor is Grafix Acetate. For animation cels in particular, you need acetate sheets that are prepared for wet media. This can be found at [link] , in a pack of 12 sheets. This is very important. If you do not get acetate that is prepared for wet media, the pen and paint will not stick correctly, and the sheets will warp, curl, discolor... etc. Mainly, other acetate is used for overhead projectors.

Above are pens available for lining. There are more I'm sure but these are the ones I found and experimented with. I found that the Copic multiliner pens are not only relatively inexpensive, considering the price copics usually go for, but they are the best lining pen. These are also available at [link] . Also, the pen at the bottom was a lining pen I bought at animeFEST 2003. I can't read it... but anyway, if you want a really really thin line, this is the kind of pen you want. it's consistent and dark and glides on smoothly and dries without being sticky.

Now some people use gouche paint for this, but I use cheap hobby store arcylic paint, sold by the bottle for $0.42. Alot more, alot cheaper, dad gum near the same result. Just lay on alot of paint, in globs. Smooth globs, but globs. If you brush it on, you not only risk smudging the inking, but you'd have to repaint two or three times. But even with globbing, go back and make sure there are no thin areas. Hold up your cel to the light and see if there are any light spots that make the color look inconsistant, then put another glob of paint over the spot to achieve the smooth color effect. You can mix in paint thinner but I personally think it's a waste of time.

There you go. If you have any other questions just note me. I hope this was helpful! =3

Hi, I know this is an old tutorial but I was wondering, are transparency acetates not good to use? Also, do you have to seal the finished product or does the paint stay on forever? thank you!
