Wow! What a beautiful hawk! Looks to me like a Sharp-shinned hawk? I had one of these impressive creatures in my backyard last year with a broken wing. I had the unique opportunity of collecting him up and bringing him to the wildlife medical center. It was an amazing experience to be so close to such a bird. I have a few of these guys each year show up in my backyard looking for smaller birds to prey on. Beautiful photo of a beautiful bird!

Oh, I was plenty nervous--believe me! I can only imagine what the bird thought of the sight walking towards him as I went to scoop him up! I was wearing three very thick wool hats that covered my ears. My biggest, heaviest parka-hood up! A pair of utility goggles, a scarf tightly wrapped around my hood to cover my mouth, and the heaviest gloves I could find. As it was the middle of summer, I was pretty warm...I calmly walked towards the bird with a big, thick beach towel in my hands, and I spoke to the bird very calmly that I was there to help him. I just kept in mind the bird was injured and not at full energy. As calmly as I could I kneeled down in front of the bird, took a deep breathe, leaned forward and gently wrapped the towel around him. He really didn't put up much of a fuss. I figured he must have been in a great deal of pain which I think was the leveler. He was absolutely beautiful! His eyes were really amazing to look into. I picked him up and placed him in a cat carrier I used to transport him. This might sound strange, but I really felt he knew I was there to help him and not harm him. It was an hour drive to the wildlife center and he never made a fuss in the carrier. When I arrived at the center the wildlife technician took a look at the bird and said he would recover and be placed in a refuge center until he gained his strength back. It was an experience I felt very lucky to have had.
