For Ruby they stay as names that sometimes slip from his parents' mouths but he doesn't know what happened to them. Only his father and uncle bring him outside the cave to explore, but on rare and short occasions.

Ruby got his name after his pelt colour
In an early draft, Ruby was supposed to be born much later after Wolfira's self-exile. Blache would be long dead and while pregnant, Scarpianos with no family left would have turned to Wolfira to ask for help, which she accepted
In the same draft, Ruby would thus be born a Mountaineer and grow up alongside [Turquoise] and [Topaze]
Still in the same draft, he would have gotten a step-father nammed Farrow
His current design didn't stray too far from his original, the only notable difference being the stripes on his stomach that changed for a patch
