Charlie had found that, even after years knowing each other and living together, she still noticed new ways that Violet did things every now and then. Today, it struck her that Violet could count off items on a list using only her left hands. She knew she had seen it before, but it always seemed so normal. "Why you asked me to marry you?" Violet giggled.

Charlie laughed. "Not quite, but maybe part of the reason. Do you use your fingers for counting often?"

Violet sat up and thought about it. "Yeah, but I don't usually notice, like just now. I do use my fingers to remember measurements sometimes when I can't write them down right away, for my sewing." She held up three fingers on her back-left hand and 5 on her front-left, miming writing with a right hand.

Charlie adjusted her pants. It didn't take much to set her off. "How do you make numbers seem cool?" she grinned.

"Oh, I don't. I hate math!" said Violet. After a moment she laughed. "Back in elementary school, when we were learning multiplication, I would definitely use my hands. 'What is three times four?'" Violet held up four fingers on three of her hands, and started pointing to each finger in turn with her back-left hand. "One, two, three, four, five, six, se- ...seven... Uh..."

Charlie, standing in front of Violet, no longer had pants on. "Why don't we go and count some other things."

"Using my hands?"

"Is there any other way?" said Charlie.
