My thinking is, do you shoot in auto? Perhaps they like rich colors and stuff that auto takes out. I would go to someone that I think is super good and ask for advice. Personally, I think the harsher the better because it's the fire that takes out the dross. Not too mean, just pointing out what you might've done wrong and what helps to make it better. I honestly don't know very much on this issue, I don't own a camera, but try finding someone who can help and is good at teaching ;9

I shoot in manual and in macro shooting mode. I'm don't use auto unless its in sports mode or just taking fun pictures with my friends. ^^
