Day 6

Alrighty so here we have Snow as an apprentice with her mentor/great auntie Rabbitthorn. It's pretty common in Marshclan to have a relative be one's mentor, strengthen those familial bonds/ legacy. By the time Icejaw became a dad Rabbitthorn was his only living relative left. She was already retired at the time. She retired a bit early on part due to a leg injury but also to help her half brother Doghowl who as he got older went blind in his only good eye so he needed some help adjusting. Rabbitthorn didn't really get a chance to form relationships with any of her brothers until much later in life, once Briarshadow had passed on and wasn't trying to actively sabotage things and isolate her. It wasn't her fault she existed and it was cruel of Briarshadow to take out her anger about Thornface's affair on her and use that as an excuse to keep her sons from getting to know their sister. They were more or less mama's boys and did as she said despite knowing it wasn't fair. They just didn't want to get on their mother's bad side, because they knew how bad it could be.

Anyway, when it came time for Icejaw's kids to be made apprentices, he asked Rabbitthorn if she'd mentor one. She had been his mentor back when he was an apprentice and this was his way of reaching out to her again. Since his mother died they'd grown apart some, guilt, grief, each burying themselves in something to try to fill that void. And Icejaw has always been the sort to have trouble communicating. Quiet stoic type and all. So it wasn't that he didn't care about his aunt, he just, wasn't all that great at gapping bridges. At first Rabbitthorn had been reluctant by his suggestion. Icejaw had been her first and only apprentice. That was because she blamed herself for Toadpaw's death. If the apprentice's hadn't left to camp to follow her on that day, like they'd done before- when she failed to scold them about it- then, they wouldn't have been caught in that storm and... he would still be alive. So she felt like she wasn't deserving of another apprentice, especially not one so precious as kin when she'd failed so badly before. But eventually she agreed, she had a soft spot for Icejaw after all, and for Snowkit/paw. His kits would visit her in the elder's den and she would captivate them with stories, both factual and fictional. She had a flare for that, one Snow was obsessed with so they got on well.

And thus Rabbit and Snow became a dynamic duo. Monkey see monkey do. Their personalities were similar, cheerful, playful, talkative- a bit too talkative as Snow would get Rabbit going on tangents instead of finishing whatever training they'd started. She only got wise to that later on. Snow wasn't the best apprentice when it came to enthusiasm about training, specifically battle training- or listening. She snuck out of camp once and Rabbitthorn caught her and absolutely laid into her which caught Snow 100% off guard and she started bawling and went crying to daddy- who was like, no, she's right. Don't do that. That was one of the few times Rabbitthorn ever lost her cool. She didn't want a repeat of Toadpaw...

So Snow and Rabbit were really close and since Icejaw wasn't all that talkative, Snow learned a lot about her family history from Rabbitthorn. In Marschaln a lot of cats could recite the names of their siblings, parents, parent's siblings, grandparents, their siblings, great grandparents, etc. So everything Snow knows about those cats who had long since passed before she was born, she learned from Rabbitthorn. She learned a lot about her grandmother from her. She learned a lot of things in general from her.

Once Snow became a warrior Rabbitthorn went back into retirement though that was short lived as she did pass away not long after. It was like she'd finished her business on this earth so she could rest. It was a peaceful passing. That didn't help Snowdove feel any better about it though and she still misses her mentor.
