This picture is very special to me. It turned out as I had hoped, which is rare for me.The person in the picture is my brother

The smoke in the picture is real, I had to use a slower shutter speed due to the lack of light. The majority of the work here went into hue/color, contrast and the softening of the light.

There are so many great attributes to this ... the darkness, the light, the smoke, the perspective ... it's just a great composition.
The smoke especially conjures up late nights in some abandoned alley, or something ...

Impressive. The semi-circle in the smoke bothers me, but if it was filled in by the smoke, there'd probably be TOO much smoke in the image. It's a hard thing to say without seeing the original, but given your statements, great job on the post-processing.

This is really a stunning piece and a great choice for the featured Deviation.
It transcends a scary, eerie vibe...the blueish tone is simply awesome and the sparse lighting is just right to set a certain mood. Wicked!

the smoke looks fake but I think its just cuz the quality of the picture sucks( I hate when that happens). Otherwise, it's an excellent pose. It really has a saddening, lost feeling to it. Good job

That kicks ass. It's replaced my previous favorite picture ever as my desktop... And I've already forgotten what the last desktop was. EXTREMELY well done, I'm in love with the smoke and the lights and the EVERYTHING. There's never really much to say about these kinds of things by the time they hit the daily favs that hasn't already been said... But know that I'm incredibly impressed. It's nice to come back after not being able to get on DevArt for 2 weeks because of ISP problems and find something like this.

This picture is gorgeous. It would have been easy to do this in b&w, but the way the photo is taken in color but has such a limited range of it adds a wonderful touch. It creates a very dark, abandoned mood because you know the darkness is really there and isn't just the way the image is captured. The lighting on your brother is also wonderful - coupled with his pose, it makes it seem as though his presence is unexpected, as though that single light just turned on and you found a person in what you thought was an abandoned place. Great job.

well I think it's a brilliant piece. I like the way the smoke forms half a circle in the middle... that tells a story.... gives a mysterious feel... it goes with ur choice of color tone (white/bluish)... very cold & spooky indeed.
One thing I might suggest for perfection: the smoke's a bit pixelated (or whatever u call it). I dont know if it's because u shrunk the image or because u blurred it too much w/ the ps... but considering the image is very smooth I'm guessing u did put some blur in it?
I'd try using a spraypaint brush with a small very intensity (say, around 5-10%) and repaint the smoke to make it look cleaner (just to cover up the shading borders, u know what i mean). That would be manipulation but what else in the world isnt?
oh one more thing, i dont know what ur intention is on the composition... but I'd put the door in the middle... it'll give a "come to the gates of hell!" feeling...hehe.
anyway, this is indeed superb. very fine work of art.
