Description Princess Zelda from Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Zelda from Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Original line-art found here:

Discontinued old version found here:

Update:
2014 - 0.5 minor update: Added color and tweaked some more.
2014 - 0.4 minor update: Minor tweaking added. Started working on tiara and jewels.
2014 - 0.3 Update: Nearly done with hair (only needing another layer with detail, single hair flying around etc). Drew and shaded missing hair wrapping. Drew some folds on the dress (incomplete) and did additional shade tweaking.
2014 - 0.2 Update: This is not an abandoned piece, I recently browsed through my all my WIP work and decided this piece deserved some attention (really want to complete it). I have done some minor tweaks to the already existing shading adding more realistic shadows and light. More notable I have redone the hair completely and is almost done with the first layers of all the hair - please be aware that hair will obviously get a more realistic look eventually.
2009 - 0.1 minor update: Did some more shading and added some text explaining new viewers that the new piece is to the left and the old one to the right.

Description:
This is a complete rework of an old (but fairly popular) piece I have done before. There are quite some drastic changes - most being much better and realistic proportions, that may be to some peoples preference and others dismay. I think it is a major improvement over the older piece.

Feel free to give me your opinion. I'm not so much interested in critique at this state, through.

FAQ:

Q: What tools did you use to draw this?
A: I cleaned the lines in with the brush tool in Photoshop using my Wacom Intuos4 tablet. I used the pen tool to shape, copy and transform the scales. Shading have been one with my newer Intous5 tablet.

Q: How long did it take you to draw this?
A: Not sure, it took me some time to ink this and I haven't counted hours spend shading.

Q: Can I color this?
A: I do not grant permissions to color my works any longer, the only exception being I already colored it myself.

Q: Can I use this?
A: No. Do not use, upload or reupload to dA without my explicit written permission. If found elsewhere without my permission I'll personally report it to the site administration as stolen.

I was actually going to say the same thing, but I guess you wouldn't take it as constructive You may not be going for realism, but there are still proportion constraints even when people are doing the huge thighed, skinny waist anime style (not that you are, I'm just using an example). Her waist seems detached from her hips. They don't really flow together. I hope that makes sense...?

I like the face on the new one a lot better. It seems a lot more realistic. Maybe that's why some people thought you were trying to be more realistic *shrugs*

Don't hurt me!

lthot In reply to stormygate [2009-06-15 01:05:45 +0000 UTC]

On this piece I've decided to completely ignore proportion comments simply because I designed the pose with a realistic female figure in one of my 3D posing tools - with that said I know for a fact that from the 3D pose that proportions are correct. There might be some other things that may make you think proportions are off. I've looked at the image and looking on the old piece she seems wider at that area - but at the same time, the proportions on that piece is very off and her torso is actually way too small in height. Also since I haven't colored most of the dress yet and having alot of white space might trick the eye with some illusion.

Meh. Hope I make sense. Maybe or maybe not, you gals will eventually change your opinion later when I get a more finished version up. We'll have to see.

most likely change opinions later when you're all finished. Just trying to help out.

I know what you mean about referencing. I used an image reference for something and it got rejected on another site for "proportion issues" and I did an image overlay to show how damn close they were. Nearly exact except for one part and it wasn't that far off. They still wouldn't take it even after I proved it. Real people aren't built perfect, but everyone seems to expect art to be. I guess art to many is just everyone's ideals translated to paper. Tough crowd, lol.

lthot In reply to stormygate [2009-06-15 01:37:00 +0000 UTC]

I hope so. I wouldn't really say "referencing", through I used to do that back when I was a random noob. The pose is my idea originally and I just posed it in a 3D tool I have. Kinda like using that artist wooden figure - just alot more advanced.

Real people ain't build perfect, no. As artists we all have a personal point of view on what looks good and does not. What I draw does not always fall in some peoples taste - we all have different oppinions on how things should look and not. It's really just a matter of personal preference and taste and can in this case not really be considered constructive critique. When looking on other peoples art - one instantly starts comparing with ones own preferences and drawing skills and then starts to point out what they personally would change. Most artists also look on their own body for proportions - but we all look different and apperantly some artists sometimes forget that.

This piece is not supposed to be realistic in any way. I know I have a special shading style that at times look realistic. But it's still just my own style and it should hopefully be able to tell people that my aim ain't realism.

Other artists are indeed tough crowd.

haha. You bring up many good points. That's the one thing I like about dA. It's not up to someone else to decide whether our art is worthy of being posted on the site. I'm like epic fail on many other sites who have a screening process for "perfect pose and proportions." It's so stupid.

The only think catching my eye that looks a bit off is her top lip. Her mouth seems out of proportion just a little, compaired the the rest of her features. I think her top lip could be a bit fuller.

But other than that, it looks good!

It might be easier for you to see that it is not once I've uploaded a better preview - perhaps with color.

Thanks.

Nice. Sweet. Nice boobs.

No, I'm kidding, hahaha.

Dude, this is really detailed for being a WIP. Thing I am MOST impressed with, currently is the hair. That's often a difficult feature for people to detail very well.

All in all, terrific work so far. Keep hammering at it in the ol' artist's forge! It's lookin' good!

LeadTheWay In reply to LeadTheWay [2009-06-13 13:52:24 +0000 UTC]

Oh wait, LEFT one is the new one, RIGHT one is the old one. Sunuva- I need to pay more attention sometimes.

Never let anyone under my command hear that.

Either way, what I said about detail still holds sway. Impressed with the eyes, too. Light reflection and refraction is tricky.

Haha, indeed. Yes, the hair will likely eventually look somewhat similar to the old hair - just, only better.
