Description
The Lotus Revolver started as a german wheellock pistol (probably dating back to the 16th century) that found its way to Japan in the hands of a firearms enthusiast and collector around 1600.
During the Shimabara Rebellion, the weapon went missing, only to be found by its former owner decades later with the firing mechanism damaged beyond repair. The pistol was stored and didn’t saw service until the Boshin War, when its mechanism was crudely replaced by the one from a Remington New Model Army (percussion revolver), later being converted to use metallic cartridges during the Satsuma Rebellion.
It wasn’t until the 1950 era that the weapon was submitted to a complete redesign, having a quicker break-top reloading mechanism (based on the Type 26 revolver), new rifling, new wood stock with black lacquer finishing, gold and oxidized copper (verdigris) plating, reinforced cylinder (being able to shoot the newly developed and much more powerful .44 Magnum round) and the lotus flower engravings from which the revolver acquired its nickname.
NOTEs: the forend and handle kanji reads "Have the Courage for Righteousness", and the golden dragon sculpture is actually the firing hammer piece.

This revolver is very pretty, I must say. Is the front post for the sight part of a key of some kind?
That's what it looks like to me, but I'm not sure if that's the intention.

You are technically right: it WAS taken from a antique key, but as it is in this firearm it is just a fancy front sight.

Interesting to hear! It's cool to see something else as the front sight, other than a post of some sort.

Have you ever thought about drawing up its original appearance as a wheellock? I think it'd be quite interesting to see how it evolved, and wheellocks are pretty uncommon in art and fiction compared to flintlocks so I think it'd have a unique feel to it as well.

I thought about it but since I use actual photos to make my firearms (and there isn't much high quality ones of wheellock pistols) I would ended up making a picture you can find anywhere, worse yet, it would be just a mashup of existing photos without any "twist" to it.
But I think that a valid comparison would be with this pistol: i.pinimg.com/originals/b7/78/5…
Thanks for the suggestion anyways.

Ah, I see. Yes, if you use photos for it then the fact wheellocks aren't particularly well known would be exactly what would make it difficult to do.
That said, that's quite a nice wheellock you linked, and I don't think I've seen that particular image before, so thank you anyway.

The wheellock pistol have been a favourite of mine since Dishonored came out, since I love old time firearms and when I tried to find out what inspired the city watch pistol I stumbled across it and instantly feel in love.
Its really hard to find any HD image of those, so save that one I linked you on your hard drive, you never know how long that image will be alive on the internet.

It suits one of my characters... If I ever post him here, it might make sense to you.

You know, with the angle of the handle and the way it reloads, you could slap a blade onto this baby an then you would have a gunblade

Yeah, I had to REALLY control myself to not do that. As much as I like to get creative with this stuff, the person that this backup revolver was made for already have an awful lot of blades.
But I might explore this concept sometime in the future nonetheless...

But hey this may give some artists inspiration in designing their own pistols in this style. If that count for anything. And You're welcome. So was done in photoshop?

This is beautiful!
A friend of mine is working on an outline for a Kim Possible "historical fusion" fanfic with The Three Musketeers (Musketeer Captain Kim and Co are protecting Princess Bonnie Rockwaller returning to claim the throne wrested from her father).
One of the proposed elements was the fictional invention of a "repeating" pistol and longarm, which in those days would basically be "weapons of mass destruction" capable of turning the tide of battles against France.
Could I secure the use of this for her? I'll see to it all due credit is given.

I say this whilst mopping up my drool. This is, in my opinion, the most beautiful firearm I have ever seen. I know it is just art, but art or real, this is still the most beautiful firearm I have ever laid my eyes upon. I think the colors are the best part. Especially the black with the jade.
PS: Would you mind if I build a real gun based on this design? (I am making a few personal firearms for the fun of building my own and now I want to build this one!)
PSS: If you ever draw something like this with a single or double break-barrel (not repeater) let me know?

Firstly, thanks for the compliment. Second, I would love to see something like this built in real life, specially because it is of my own design so, if you ever do, please, send me pictures. Last, but not least, I will keep you informed if anything like that come by!
Annnnnd, since you are new... Welcome to DA!

wow okay this awesome question did you come up with gun style yourself or is this base on real revolver

LucasHC90 In reply to duskthehedgehog744 [2016-02-01 15:33:48 +0000 UTC]
Thank you!
The wood parts (and overall shape) are based on old German wheellock pistol. Some matchlock rifles and pistols did went to Japanese officials and collector and many received similar aesthetic treatment, commonly known as Tanegashima. The revolver itself is indeed a Remington New Model army, but those were percussion revolvers and, when cartridges were developed, some were in fact converted to inumerous types of ammunition (like the .44 magnum here). The Type 26 revolver made by Japan were break top, but I moved the hige forward to strengthen the frame and allow the black wood forend to exist. That last one, as well as the color scheme, golden engravings and the use of oxidized copper were entirely my idea.
Any more questions, feel free to ask.
