Description
I've finally found a couple of hours to dedicate to Mariah Carey's portrait.I was really relaxed and after having continued just a little bit her hair I moved to the dress' tie and decided it was easier, after a long break, to focus my attention to that part which is basically built by contrasts.
I used a bit of dark to separate the tie from her skin, and brushes to delicately blend the graphite and create the reflections of the silky fabric.
Now I'll try to work again on the hair - ouch it will be hard! he he he
* Derwent graphite pencils (from 3H to 5B)
* Faber-Castell black watercolor pencil
* Arches hot-press watercolor paper

naahhh I've started it in june 2006 but I've been busy with exams at University and I've also worked on a commissioned portrait recently.
Now I'll try to finish Mariah Carey's portrait as soon as possible

Very nice, and sharp quality. Curious though: do you ever do anything to differ the drawing from its photo reference rather than simply record everything faithfully?

LucaTedde In reply to west-fall- [2007-05-01 07:41:19 +0000 UTC]
I'm really glad you asked me that, 'cause people often think I just copy pictures strictly.
I always make changes from the reference if I think there are things in the reference picture that doesn't help the drawing to be better.
In this case:
β’ I've decided not to draw the wisp of hair that falls down from the back of her ear, it was really distracting and didn't add a lot to the portrait;
β’ I've also decided not to include in my portrait the feathers - same reasons as mentioned above;
β’ I've also decided to enhance a bit her make-up, for example all the glitters on her eyelids aren't present in the reference picture;
β’ I'll do a little changes in the hair too...

I dont have much time at the moment.. but damn NICE
wow the hair.. just everything..
maybe you can improve on one thing on the drawing.. the left side (for us to see) of the hair (under) by the neck.. its a bit blurry.. maybe sharpen it a bit up?.. anyway.. maybe its okΓ© like this.. just finish it man
Splendidooo

LOOOOOLLLLL
thank you man, about the hair on the left I know it is blurred and in the photograph is maybe even more blurred. I did it detailed at the beginning but then I thought it wasn't really natural, anyway in a bigger version it looks a little more detailed than here, I'll send it to you during one of our conversions on MSN
