I love the character's intense expression; it drew me into the work when I saw the thumbnail, and I think it adds an interesting sort of drama combined with the grayscale. Great work on the hands, too! ^^

Man I really need to start experimenting with different pencils. The shading here is miles better than what I'm capable of at the moment.

Maybe it's not about having different pencils as it is using the same pencil the right way.
Always start with building up the color little by little. Don't press too hard the pencil on the paper, control the pressure of your hand... ! It's easier this way and you'll get better results (I suck at explaining things lol)
