Wow, it's been a long time since I read the Borges story; I'm due for a reread. I love the colors in this, and I like what you did with the Minotaur's face--humanized a bit, but not human. My first thought before I read the other comments was of John Gardner's book Grendel. I like getting the monster antagonist's perspective on a story. The camera angle and lighting are wonderful too, and the whole piece has a painterly, illustrative quality that's very suited to the subject.

The Borges' story is awesome. I haven't read Grendel, will look into it. Thank you. It is so wonderful to able to blend the beast and human features with the model to get just what I wanted, an aware but still beastly being.Β

Thanks. But what would you feed him? Not really a herbivore like Β his father. Β Β

Hot dogs? He's so cute and cool at the same time; I'll give him whatever he wants. Almost.

now the question is - does the Minotaur actually want to be slain?...

Who knows? Because you asked I looked and discovered that I had the Borges' House of Asterion story. So I read it or (or maybe re-read?) it. I love Borges. Like so many of his stories, this one was very moving for me. Makes me want to do more Minotaur renders. Β I was trying to make the beast look less monstrous than it is usually portrayed, so I mixed the Tauran 2 head morph with some human ones. ("Not for nothing was my mother a queen.") Interesting that the Borges story was inspired by a painting (George Frederick Wattsβ The Minotaur.)

I don't know the story - but I have always felt that the 'monsters' are credited with too little feelings. But I think that is a modern interpretation of monsters who looks at them as separate identities - while in earlier times they were manifestations of the dark side of humanity. So... they couldn't by definition be anything but evil.

We humans are fascinated by both angels and monsters, understandably.Β
