That is amazing! Did you have any snaggs, or mishaps? or was it a clean build all the way through? I am getting into complex modeling myself and I'm trying to imagine what it is like to work on such an impressive project such as this.

well its not as difficult as you might think. really its a repetitive process to make these pieces, I dont even have to pay allot of attention, I make these in my spare time whilst watching movies and tv series. One of the annoying things with robots like this is doing the uvs across hundreds of pieces.. that can be quite mind numbing!

I can imagine! I use Blender (Starting to learn 3Dsmax) and it is Not the best at unwrapping. If you take a look at some of my renders you will notice that I focus on the form rather than detail of the model. How did you get your mesh to be so precise to the reference image? Did you have multiple points of view drawings, or was it all from a single drawing?

Lucid-Grey In reply to Mc-Squiggle [2012-10-18 22:54:27 +0000 UTC]
this particular model was from one drawing from the front perspective, and a really rough sketch for the back. I saw some of your work before, I quite like the red structure in the room with the light coming through the top .
Overall, form is always more important then the fine detail, without a doubt.. form is primary whilst small detail is secondary. For this robot, I spent most of the time getting the proportions as close as I could, and adding fine detail was the final touches .. With large projects, It can be easy to lose focus and willpower, but once its done.. You get allot of satisfaction from the finished piece!.
I've recently been approached to create a tutorial/lecture series to create a high quality robot/asset. I'm hoping I can create something great for that so others can see that it really isn't that hard, and it just takes a bit of time

A tutorial would be great! I currently attend a Performing and Visual Arts Highschool but sadly there are no CGi classes. Everything I know is from experimenting with the software and logic based assumptions as to what everything does. My friend mentioned Andrew Price as someone to learn from. I watched a couple of his videos and even did a couple of pieces using his techniques and inspiration but I mostly found it as a review for the things that I already figured out.
I often found myself listening to hour long lectures on human anatomy and Light Wrapping/Dispersion in order to gain a more accurate understanding of how the world works and how I can replicate it. The thing I need to work on is my understanding of 'space' and perspective with my drawings and sketches. Do you have any tips on how I can hone my observational drawing skills with both real objects/people/environments, and imaginary objects/people/environments?

Well im sure you already know the answer for this one. Practice, theres no way to cut corners unfortunately. Although my drawing skills aren't very good. I don't think you need to draw good to be good at 3d, .. its all a state of mind "perception" as it were. e.g. You can make something and think it looks completely amazing, but a couple months later you can look back at it and realize its full of flaws and see loads of areas to improve on it. There are things you can do to make your models more appealing and realistic.. e.g a common thing is cg flat surfaces, they are mathematically perfect, and in real life this is just about impossible!.. so putting slight curves though flat surfaces will help look real when the light hits it. eg a table top, beginners will generally make a cube and flatten it out into a table surface, bevel it here and there and call it a day. But most tables will have a slight buckle through the middle, this can change the way the light surface a surprising amount. Its things like this that can create a more realistic image!

Lol that goes back to the Form vs Detail idea where they both go hand in hand. I will be sure to pay attention to the little 'imperfections' and I completely agree with on on the perspective bit only on a much larger scale. (my concept is about loops of ideas and understanding that Self realization leads to Separation, which leads to Reconstruction, which leads to Self Realization which leads to...)
All of your insight is awesome! Thank you for helping me out!

It would be expensive for sure. but I am in the process of getting my own printer so talk to me if you are interested...

quite a bit, one of the major things is that your mesh has to be watertight.. meaning there are no holes in the mesh.. so it has volume or thinckness

i recognized the Vray touch
beware on 3Drints, some methods work as "layered powder solidification" and looks terrible when you look closer, and some positions can't be reproduced, but i think new systems have been released. you have an idea on what company you gonna ask this?

i've got a gtx 580, but it doesnt help you too much.. at least not in maya, because the rt system isnt working too good. the new vray update supports cuda core tech, which would help.
