Nowadays there are plenty of tutorials, so it's fairly easy to learn specific styles but it can take years to learn deeper understanding of how fractals work in Apophysis - and how to create something on your own without a tutorial. So, it's easy to learn to make pretty flower fractal with a tutorial, but to learn how to make original pretty flower will take some time. For some people it's months, for others it's years or maybe even never. Be prepared to put hours, weeks and months of work into the learning process and you will be rewarded with endless possibilities. Once you become a fractal artist, you will always have something new to learn and explore

I use many colors for my fractal backgrounds. Just not 100% white or 100% black.

I never learned how to make the new fancy kind either.  I still enjoy playing around in 2.09 and 3d hack when the mood strikes.  
I love the colors in this, by the way.

Thank you I suspect that the most of the new fancy stuff is actually Apophysis in combination with Chaotica, I've seen a tutorial recently for Chaotica that showed some stuff which simply can't be done in Apophysis alone. Which is whole another ballgame to learn, so I understand fellow souls who got stuck with the older stuff
