At least Nintendo decided to cut all ties and even not mention it in the 25th anniversary Zelda book.

So me being from the Netherlands, this is touchy aswell.
The animation was bad in forgiveable humerous way. Is just got turned into a meme and thats why it got blown up. BUT, me being an animator aswell, no, the problem was not the quallity it was the over-expressive motion and cheesy writing, not so much the beginners quallity. It was a product of its time where most cartoon tried too hard to be ''rad'' and ''relateable''.
Also, the game's bad gameplay was 90% due to the limitations of the system. 10% for the aesthetic that made no clear contrast between fore and background. The philips cd-i was a failure, so the games released on it face the struggle of trying to atleast be decent with alot of luck.
ps. the animation and art in the warcraft game was incredible imo, but working for blizzard at that time was nothing special, they werent as big as they are now.

I don't think I've ever seen a game be so bad someone felt the need to absolve their country's part in it before. This is interesting & informative though. Good job!

B-bunny say wat?...*shakes head*
What were we paying attention to again?
heh, anyway, I know people like to save money but you'd think they would choose a company (or a group of people) who have had some experience in animation.
I did indeed see this horrible game at a video store when it first came out, I don't even remember any gameplay, just those scary faces.
I think if the bunny girl replaces all the actors for that game, it would be much better.

Hehehe Thank you
One of the guys, creators of Animation Magic, was ex-Russian Igor Razboff. In Soviet times we have tons of good computer specialists. Animation side wasn't so good in St. Petersburg ( much much MUCH better in Moscow ), but there were a lot of traditional artists. If you look at those Zelda games you will notice that backgrounds looks nice. However, the animation sucks big time
>>I think if the bunny girl replaces all the actors for that game, it would be much better.
Oh I wish I could... But I bet my animation would look also terrible

Haha, man, the CD-i.
Here's another neat factoid: The CD-i had only one audio channel, so every time they had to make a sound effect they had to very briefly pause the music! XD

Yup. Nintendo breaking it off with Sony and switching to Philips is widely regarded as one of if not the biggest business mistakes in the history of the game industry.

LucidARTDVC In reply to TheSoylentOrange [2012-05-27 18:24:23 +0000 UTC]
It's from today perspective.
In that time Sony wasn't so big and Philips already did a lot of good devices.

No, even back then the prototype playstation had better specs and more solid backing- it was a matter of contract disputes and this was back when Hiroshi Yamauchi thought he ruled the world by divine fiat. It was an intentional snubbing of Sony for not falling in line.

TheSoylentOrange In reply to LucidARTDVC [2012-05-27 18:46:59 +0000 UTC]
Yamauchi's style was great for turning Nintendo into a juggernaut, but not for keeping it there. Ascending the throne is a different skillset than ruling from it and one he just didn't have, which led to the disastrous life-cycle of the Nintendo 64 and his subsequent stepping down in the GameCube era.

I think one of the coolest ones is that Atari's biggest rival in the late 70's was Kee Games. Read up on them, it's really fascinating.
Other than that, there's the tempest around the original licensing of Tetris, right down to KGB involvement... Oh, and the lawsuit between Universal and Nintendo regarding their respective famous Kongs...

LucidARTDVC In reply to TheSoylentOrange [2012-05-30 08:54:40 +0000 UTC]
Oh, I saw loooong documentary about Tetris.
Not exactly KGB. That's urban legend.
We had very serious special governmental department for selling thing abroad. So there was no difference what to sell: oil, wood or Tetris
The main thing: one company got license for producing cartridges, another for handhelds. At the end all copyrights ended in one company.
Kee Games? Oh yes. Good trick, but not enough scandalous. We need some huge pile of "skeletons in the closet"

Hey, don't take my word for it; the KGB line came for Pajitnov himself in a documentary.
Hmm... Scandal...
Hell, look up Jack Tramiel and Ray Kassar. Both of them were just shy of terrorists to the early-80's game market.
And the Universal/Nintendo legal fight I mentioned was definitely full of sleaze for sure.

That legend must be editorial corrections. "Adding the spice", as they say.
Ah yes, those two... I really liked AVGN's "Swordquest" video. That would be perfect to find something like this.

To be fair, there were representatives from major companies from three continents all in the ELORG building there. If Pajitnov says "There were probably KGB reading up on everyone who came through the door that morning" I'd believe him.
And yeah, that video was nice. Could totally see Jack just keeping those, it'd be so like him.

Both sexy and enlightening, I remembered reading about this a long time ago and I am glad that I wasnt remembering wrong, sexy bunny lady you are getting more intelligent and frisky by the second... watch out , what's next... she takes off her top to show us her bra? But of course we will learn something amazing that is factual, heh. I love all the expressions in this piece along with how Russian wasnt in red, it would have been a little cliche but very funny
