The Johnson Park dog run is a great overall place not exceeded by any other in the Midwest. There are 28 acres of wooded areas and fields, the Root River, and several smaller streams for dogs to play, swim, and run, and always a new path to explore.
This is where I take my dog regularly and where most of my nature shots are taken.

I really want to critique this piece, because I think its something special and it deserves is. I only ever critique pieces I think are the full five stars, or else I feel mean, haha! I don't write them often but here goes...
First of all, I'm glad you refrained from making this black and white. Others may have been tempted to but I love the dark, desaturated tones with just a hint of blue. It makes this photograph so much more haunting. In many ways it looks like an old photograph, almost Victorian...
Composition wise it certainly ticks the right boxes, in particular the way the plant on the left is able to stand out. There are so many lovely shapes in here that to have photographed the whole cluster would have lost all of that lovely detail. By shooting from this angle you have allowed the beautiful silhouettes of the plants to be seen clearly. The faded tree in the background provides an extra sense of depth and perspective, rather than simply plants and sky.
I also like the fact that the bottom of this photo, especially to the right, are not simply dark masses. You can still make out details within the dark ares, which is far more pleasing to the eye.
Overall its certainly one of the more creative nature photographs I've seen. Usually nature photographs are either full colour or black and white, but here we have an exception.
Very well done!
This piece gets full stars because, as mentioned above, it stands out. Its a really different sort of nature photography, you had a different vision and made it real.

Being an amateur photographer with no formal training its good to know how others feel on the technical aspects too as I don't get many critiques.

There is something very appealing about this and I'd love to know how you achieved this look. As said in the critique the composition works superbly well and I too like the detail still visible in the shadows. Good one !
On a critical note I am not sure about the tiny white specks of the dew/reflected light and the distracting little patches of brightness top right.

I took the photo early early morning when everything was wet and there was fog and it had been raining the night before.
I'm not really sure how I achieved the look. I think I just got lucky with it.
I use a sony dsc - h10 compact camera. It's a nicer model than most compacts I believe.

Yes, that shot is from the dog run where I take my dog, the run winds through an expanse of woods with a small wild flower field in the middle, there is a river that flows through it also. Very beautiful place.
