Thanks! Yeah, luna moths are pretty cool, it's a shame they don't live around here

Same here... Our moths are much smaller and less impressive, but still we have a few pretty specimen.

Oh, you're from Germany - I guess our fauna and flora are pretty similar, as we areneighbours And yeah, I agree, you can find beautiful moths and butterflies here - one of my all-time favourite is a Peacock butterfly, and it's really common here.

I live in a city, so unfortunately we don't have that many pretty insects here. Butterflies are rare but I know the pecock butterfly! It is very pretty and outside the cities you can find it. And cute little blue ones, white and yellow ones....

Gorgeous! So you use a fine brush for the lines in the wood grain, like a rigger? I'm new to watercolor and keep wanting to use sharpened watercolor pencils for fine detail. The detail in your work is mesmerizing.

Thank you! I put two tutorials together, if you're interested: [link]
I should put wood tutorial together sometime too But basically, when I paint wood, I make a pale wash of wet in wet, then one or two layers of dry-brush and after that I create the thin lines with a small brush. I prefer synthetic or mixed brushes, especially for this kind of detailed work, because I feel they offer much more control over the medium. Of course, larger natural brushes are invaluable for loose paintings.

Thank you for the response. I'll read over both tutorials as well as practice making thin lines with brushes instead of pencils.

This is absolutely stunning. The color of the drops are gorgeous and the shading is wonderful as well. I am also amazed by the lines you took the time to place into the tree. They are so much fun to look at and they make the wood look realistic. The carved out design in the middle was also a wonderful touch, it's so beautiful and it really draws the eye to the moth. As for the moth itself, the luna moth is one of my favorite bugs (as cliche as it may be), and you painted it wonderfully. The wings look so soft and velvety. I'm really in shock that you were able to achieve that look with watercolor!! <3

Simple and incredibly beautiful! The little details in this are wonderful, such as the semi-transparency of the wings and the smooth texture of the wood! I love it.

This is lovely...a butterfly on carved wood...who'd have thought??? lol
The water drops are amazing...youve done this so well. I cant get my watercolours
to blend so well (as in ur drops) U must do a tutorial on how to do water drops...I'll be forever in ur debt ^w^

Thanks!
They're not suppose to be water drops, but gemstones, though when they are on similarly coloured surface, people tend to confuse those two (or perhaps it's more natural to assume that there are water drops on the wood rather than gemstones).
Anyway, I did a tutorial, quite a while ago, where I explain my process when painting those stones/drops

OMG....Im so sorry!!! They are beautiful stones
Ive never been able to do them well enough. I can give the
observer a hint that theres drops there, Im gona have to
get a finer brush. My art set consists of one brush & a
set of watercolours. I use printer paper cos I dont have the
money for anything else ...but I have plenty of practice.
(Tho not lots of time)
Great tutorials btw...very informative..thanks for ur generous
spirit & sharing with us learners ^w^

Ha, no problem, nothing happened.
Well, brushes are important in watercolour and I'd say that it pays off to invest in a good brush. You don't have to have thousand brushes, I personally use mostly for or five, and I paint the details with a really really small brush (00).
Printer paper isn't a good choice for watercolour, because it isn't thick enough, it's way too smooth and its surface is chemically treated. I believe that if you try real watercolour paper, you won't be coming back to printer paper

It is not too expensive here for stuff...I'll just hav to get things one at a time per week.

I love the warmth and richness of these colours and the gently curved lines. I can almost feel sap surging through that wood.
