One franchise I've been focused on revisiting for some time is Scooby-Doo As of this writing, I have caught up on the original Scooby-Doo: Where Are You!, The New Scooby-Doo Movies, The Scooby-Doo Show, Laff-a-Lympics, Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo (both the 1979 version and the 1980 version that left out Fred, Daphne, and Velma), The Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo Show, The New Scooby and Scrappy-Doo Show, The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo, Scooby-Doo and the Curse of the 13th Ghost, the Supernatural crossover ScoobyNatural, the alternate continuity prequel film Daphne & Velma, Scooby-Doo: The Mystery Begins, and Scooby-Doo: Curse of the Lake Monster.

The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo was one of my favorite Scooby-Doo cartoons when I was a kid, next to the original 1969 series, The New Scooby-Doo Movies, and A Pup Named Scooby-Doo. Hearing that they'd make a direct-to-video film to give the series closure when it didn't end with all 13 ghosts from the Chest of Demons being recaptured made me very excited, so I bought the original show and Scooby-Doo and the Curse of the 13th Ghost from iTunes to eventually catch up on this iteration of the Scooby-Doo franchise.

Having finally caught up on all 13 episodes of the original show and the direct-to-video film that was billed as serving as the long belated conclusion to the original series, I've decided to do a new tribute to the original show, complete with updated information on the 13 ghosts and what happened in the episodes they appeared in. I preemptively apologize for some descriptions being a bit lengthy also watch out for spoilers. The previous tribute picture will still be here because I'm humble enough to allow you all to know that not all my pictures were perfect.

The premise of this show is that Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Daphne Blake, and Scooby's nephew Scrappy find their way in the Himalayas (they were supposed to go to Hawaii, but Shaggy got lost). There, they meet a young boy named Flim-Flam McScam (voiced by Susan Blu) and are tricked by a pair of ghosts named Weerd and Bogel (voiced respectively by Arte Johnson and Howard Morris) into opening the Chest of Demons in the premiere episode "To All the Ghouls I've Loved Before". The main conflict in that episode had Daphne Blake turned into a werewolf, her lycanthropy eventually cured by Flim-Flam's Losta Luck Joy Juice.

With the guidance of warlock Vincent Van Ghoul (who is modeled after and voiced by the late great Vincent Price), it's up to Scooby and the gang to recapture all 13 of the ghosts from the Chest of Demons, with Bogel and Weerd occasionally trying to offer their services to the 13 ghosts as henchmen for hire, only to annoy the 13 ghosts with their incompetence and bumbling.

1. Maldor the Malevolent- The first ghost to be recaptured in the series was Maldor the Malevolent, an evil sorcerer who wanted the Wonder Wand. The gang faced him in the episode "Scoobra Kadoobra", where Scooby ended up using the Wonder Wand. In the end, Maldor was forced back into the Chest of Demons after being turned into a frog, with Scooby breaking the sleeping curse he put on Daphne and the dog princess by kissing them (it was said only a Great Danish Prince could break the spell and the heroes determined that Scooby being a Great Dane was close enough). Maldor was voiced by Peter Cullen. You can tell, too, because he sounds just like Optimus Prime and Smash, leader of the Crooked Ninja Turtle Gang.

2. Queen Morbidia- Queen Morbidia was a vampire-like ghost faced in the episode "Me and My Shadow Demon", where the gang were also trailing a sinister shadow demon near Befuddled Manor. Morbidia and her minions were defeated when Scooby and the gang stalled for time until the sun came up. Morbidia was turned into ash by the sun and her remains were scooped up by Flim-Flam and put into the Chest of Demons. Queen Morbidia was voiced by the late Linda Gary.

The part I remembered the most from this episode was the creepy scene of Vincent yelling at Flim-Flam from the crystal ball while his face was scrambled.

3. Reflector Specter- A hideous demon with a booming voice who hides in mirrors and was recaptured in the episode "Reflections in a Ghoulish Eye". His episode had the gang attend a paranormal convention in Morocco, with his return to the Chest of Demons made possible because of Flim-Flam buying a gadget called the Vacuu-Spook. He was voiced by Alan Oppenheimer, which can be confirmed by how he sounds a bit like Prime Evil from the Filmation Ghostbusters cartoon. While not called by name within the episode, he was referred to as Reflector Specter on the subtitles of the show's DVD release.

4. Zomba- A zombie witch who somehow lands a job as a horror hostess in the episode "That's Monstertainment", where she lures Scooby and friends into the airing of a movie called The Son of The Bride of The Ghost of Frankenstein. After enduring some comical slapstick in her efforts to find the Chest of Demons, she tries to torment our heroes inside the film, where Scooby-Doo is forced to take on the role of Dr. Frankenstein and creates Frankenscoob's Monster. The heroes manage to succeed in putting her back into the Chest of Demons. All sources I've consulted state that Zomba was voiced by Les Tremayne.

5. Ghost Captain- The sixth episode of the series, "Ship of Ghouls", had Shaggy and Daphne decide to take Scooby on a vacation because he needed a break from seeing so many ghosts. They end up going on a cruise on the Queen Myrtle, which turns out to be run by the ghosts of people who died when the ship sank 50 years ago, the captain himself having pretended to be the travel agent who arranged for the trip and intent on sailing to the Bermuda Triangle to force the Chest of Demons open.

Upon reaching the Bermuda Triangle and forcing the Demon Chest open, the Ghost Captain tries to join forces with the cyclops cyclone ghost (which we can assume is a gestalt form of the previous four recaptured ghosts), but the creature only turned on him and consumed him along with the rest of the ghosts. Through trickery, the cyclops thing was then put back into the Chest of Demons. The Ghost Captain was voiced by Richard "Dick" Erdman, with Robert "Bob" Ridgely voicing his disguise as Captain Ferguson.

It's long been disputed whether or not the Ghost Captain counted as one of the ghosts released from the Chest of Demons, primarily due to how the episode never clearly stated whether or not he was one of the 13 ghosts and the cyclone gestalt clearly didn't like him, which could give the impression that he was just another ghost that the heroes had to deal with in addition to recapturing the 13 ghosts that were set free. We can lay this debate to rest now because Tim Sheridan, the writer of Curse of the 13th Ghost, has said in a tweet that he counted 12 ghosts being recaptured with the episode "Ship of Ghouls" included, plus the synopsis for the episode on the show's iTunes releases explicitly states that the captain is one of the 13 ghosts.

I have a couple of theories to explain being captain of the Queen Myrtle and having trouble controlling the released Chest Demons. It could be that he was already a ghost when the Queen Myrtle originally sailed and that he had tricked people aboard so he could kill them and make them his minions, and with the new backstory establishing that Vincent Van Ghoul once had to recapture the 13 ghosts himself after he and his friend Mortifer Quinch set them free and no clear clarification of how long it took them to recapture all the ghosts, there's wiggle room that the Ghost Captain caused the Queen Myrtle disaster before Vincent and Mortifer recaptured him.

In regards to the cyclone gestalt turning on him, I have this simple observation: Just because the 13 ghosts were imprisoned together doesn't mean they all got along!

6. Nekara- Nekara was the ghost the gang had to recapture in "A Spooky Little Ghoul Like You". She had charm powers that worked exclusively on warlocks and could be used to drain warlocks of their powers only on Friday the 13th. She tried to marry Vincent Van Ghoul to drain his energy, but our heroes stalled the wedding until midnight and Nekara ended up back in the Chest of Demons, but not before swearing that she'd get even with Vincent Van Ghoul someday. Sources I've consulted say that Linda Gary voiced her.

7. Marcella- Marcella was the monster of the week for the episode "When You Witch Upon a Star", where it turns out that she got trapped in another dimension shortly after she escaped the Chest of Demons. Much to her misfortune, her only hope of being freed from this alternate plane is to rely on the Brewski Sisters, a trio of incompetent witches based on The Three Stooges.

She ends up back in the Chest of Demons when the spell the Brewski Sisters were supposed to read to free her had an incantation scrawled over it that put her back into the Demon Chest. Voice actor information has been inconsistent. One source I consulted said she was voiced by Gay Autterson, another said that she was voiced by B.J. Ward. It doesn't help that 13 Ghosts was one of many cartoons that credited the voice actors, but didn't bother clarifying who voiced who. It annoys me even though a lot of my favorite cartoons have done that.

8. Time Slime- The villain in the episode "It's a Wonderful Scoob", who schemed to move time forward to when he would rule the world. Scooby doesn't feel he can stand going on with hunting ghosts, but Vincent Van Ghoul proves to him that he can't quit by showing what's become of his friends and loved ones in the future: Flim-Flam and Scrappy are biker minions of Time Slime, Daphne has been enslaved and has aged horribly, and Shaggy has "gone bananas", believing that Scooby will one day come to help everyone and refusing to accept that his buddy has abandoned them out of cowardice.

After going back to before Time Slime opened the Chest of Demons, Scooby saves the rest of the gang and Time Slime gets put back in the Chest of Demons. A lot of sources have claimed that Time Slime was voiced by Robert Ridgely, but he is actually voiced by Bernard Erhard. I know this because Bernard Erhard was one of the credited voice actors for The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo and Time Slime sounds exactly like Cy-Kill, the main villain of Challenge of the GoBots, only with a reverb effect added to his voice.

P.S. Baby Scooby was cute!

9. Demondo- An obese demon with an enchanted pen who was fought in "Scooby in Kwackyland". Using his magic ink, Demondo's plan was to bewitch newspaper comics so that demons would come out of the comics and scare everyone. The newspaper given to Scooby and the gang ends up trapping our heroes inside the comic strips, where they have to find the pen before Demondo does. After restoring him to the Demon Chest by putting the paper in there before he got free, Scooby was relieved to find that all the comic strip characters like Platypus Duck and the Wacky Wizard were still alive.

Demondo was voiced by Michael Rye. His episode was another one I remember viewing when I was a child. The funny thing is I remembered Platypus Duck promising to take Scooby and friends to the Wacky Wizard, but I did not remember him doing so in song.

10. Rankor- A vampire demon who wished to join S.A.P.S. (the Spooks and Poltergeist Society). He was recaptured in the episode "Coast-to-Ghost", where he tried to gain membership by using the Eye of Eternity to turn Vincent Van Ghoul into stone. Bogel and Weerd also had their own plan to gain membership by taking the Chest of Demons by pretending to be reformed, only to get rebuked by the literal head of S.A.P.S. (literal because he was just a floating disembodied head).

Rankor was at risk of being destroyed by sunlight until Scrappy and Flim-Flam offered that he could avoid the sun by returning to the Chest of Demons, resulting in Rankor being the only ghost to return to the Chest of Demons willingly. Rankor's voice actor was Hamilton Camp. I also remember seeing this episode when I was young, primarily the pilot who ended up seeing two of everything because of the glasses Rankor gave him.

11. Professor Phantazmo- The ghost fought in "The Ghouliest Show on Earth", Phantazmo was a ringmaster who ran a circus that looked pleasant because of an enchanted calliope, when in truth he was beguiling them with monsters and a wreck of a carnival in disguise. He ended up losing his hold on everyone and put back into the Chest of Demons when Flim-Flam took his lariat and used it against him in addition to destroying the calliope.

Professor Phantazmo was voiced by Alan Oppenheimer.

12. Zimbulu- The last of the 13 ghosts who was recaptured in the original series, Zimbulu was a lion demon the team encountered in the episode "Horror-Scope Scooby", where our heroes appeared on a TV show hosted by Boris Kreepoff (voiced by John Stephenson), a caricature of Boris Karloff who was also an old friend of Vincent Van Ghoul's who graduated from Terror Tech with him in 36 (not 1936, just 36). After attempting to open the Chest of Demons at the winter solstice, Zimbulu was sucked up in the Vacuu-Spook and restored to the Chest of Demons.

It was also revealed that Boris Kreepoff tried to take the Chest of Demons to get back at Vincent Van Ghoul for getting more dates than him when they were in school, and he was quite ashamed that he almost doomed the world over a petty grudge. All sources I've consulted said that Zimbulu was voiced by Peter Cullen.

13. Asmodeus- The 13th and final ghost from the Chest of Demons, who was set up as the main villain of Scooby-Doo and the Curse of the 13th Ghost. The story begins with Mystery, Inc. forced into retirement when a sheriff chews them out for accusing an innocent man (Farmer Morgan). While starting a garage sale consisting of the Mystery Machine and mementos of their past cases, Scooby and Shaggy are horrified when Vincent Van Ghoul contacts them on the crystal ball and informs them that he's come across the 13th ghost.

As Fred Jones and Velma Dinkley are brought up to speed on what Shaggy, Scooby, and Daphne did without them, they end up meeting a much older Flim-Flam (now voiced by Noshir Dalal) who has set up a shop that sells monster-hunting doodads and Vincent reveals the dark secret of the 13th ghost: Asmodeus was originally his ancestor Asamad Van Ghoul, who ended up imprisoned in the Chest of Demons after he became corrupted and transformed into a demon.

In the end, the Asmodeus the gang was confronting turns out to actually be Vincent's old friend Mortifier Quinch in disguise, who used an illusion to fake his death years ago after they originally recaptured Asmodeus and had disguised himself as the King of Demons because he intended to sell the Demon Chest. Both Asmodeus and Mortifer Quinch were voiced by Nolan North. Mortifer notably talked with a Peter Lorre impression, which Nolan certainly has experience doing since he was the official voice of Crash Bandicoot villain Dr. N. Gin during the Radical era.

Vincent Price obviously couldn't reprise his role as Vincent Van Ghoul due to passing away in 1993, eight years after the original series ended its run, so they had Maurice LaMarche voice him for the movie, which makes sense because A: Maurice LaMarche previously voiced Vincent Van Ghoul in Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated, and B: Aside from Orson Welles and Kirk Douglas, Vincent Price is the celebrity Maurice LaMarche is most well-known for making a successful career out of impersonating.

Sadly, not everyone was satisfied with Curse of the 13th Ghost, the main area of contention being the fact that they had to hint the possibility that the adventures of the 13 Ghosts era weren't really supernatural. Even with the hint that Velma might be wrong about it all just being Himalayan hallucinations, it's kind of baffling that they'd go that direction when 13 Ghosts isn't the only continuity where the gang encountered real supernatural creatures, plus such a move coming off as insulting to fans of the show hoping for an actual ending. Also, Velma's insistence that ghosts aren't real and that her friends are idiots for believing in them made her look a lot more smug and condescending than usual. In short, a bit out of character.

My opinion on the movie is that it was okay, but it still could've been handled better. Several of the negative reviews of the film I've read have even accused Sheridan of not actually watching the original series. One particular review felt that there was no point in having the move part of the Scooby-Doo direct-to-DVD film series and that the film could've just been its own thing in its own continuity.

While at this point I am used to Scrappy-Doo getting constantly shafted and only ever brought back or acknowledged to pander to his detractors by making him the butt of the joke, I'm also a bit miffed that they only had him briefly mentioned in this movie, a decision that's especially odd considering that they actually bothered to redeem Flim-Flam, the one character that even the most dedicated Scrappy detractors agree was a worse character than Scrappy.

In light of this controversy, one future project I plan is to end the show my own way. The only concepts from Curse of the 13th Ghost that will be reused are Flim-Flam being older (because I like how he's changed and while I was indifferent toward the character at best when I watched the original show, it'd just be weird to ignore him) and the established information and backstory on the 13th ghost (Asmodeus being a corrupt ancestor of Vincent Van Ghoul's is just too awesome and I couldn't come up with a better idea for the 13th ghost if I tried).

I'm currently undecided on what to do with Mortifer Quinch, seeing that this time the Asmodeus the gang will face won't be a crook in a disguise. I've thought about having Mortifer die for real when he and Vincent originally recaptured Asmodeus as well as just straight up having Mortifer Adapted Out.

The story will have Mystery, Inc. as adults, with Fred trying to muster the courage to propose to Daphne and Shaggy having a nephew who I'm certain will get backlash for being a Scrappy clone. I've already thought of a name for Shaggy's nephew (Orville), but the less embarrassing nickname is hard to decide on because I can't think of a rhyme with "Shaggy" that anyone would be okay with using to address a four-year-old.

There will also be more nods to the general franchise. The Boo Brothers and the Grimwood Girls are intended to appear in the story as allies, plus Dr. Selena Drake, the main villain of the video game Scooby-Doo: Mystery Mayhem, will appear as a recruited minion of Asmodeus to handle the stuff only mortals can do.

I'd really appreciate it if other fans of Scooby-Doo are willing to provide input and suggestions on how they think a conclusion to The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo should go. I'm not just making this for myself, but for everyone on this planet who feels that Curse of the 13th Ghost was even a little bit of a letdown.

WTF? I know that a lot of the latest Scooby-Doo installments were polarizing at best, but do you have to go into a meltdown about it?
