Here it is. The next-to-last picture I am making to pay tribute to the many characters of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise to celebrate the upcoming 2012 cartoon and the upcoming 2014 film Ninja Turtles(which I assure you all is devoid of alien turtles).

Now that I've made drawings paying tribute to the different incarnations of the Turtles' rogues gallery, their allies, and all four of the Turtles themselves, now is time to make a drawing that chronicles the different incarnations of the one who taught them everything they know: Their rat sensei and surrogate father Master Splinter! Beware of spoilers.

Mirage Comics-

The original comics, as most of us know, were much darker than later incarnations of the Turtles. Splinter was once a pet rat owned by a ninja master named Hamato Yoshi. Being very intelligent for a mere rat, Splinter learned about ninjitsu by watching his master practice.

Hamato Yoshi and another ninja named Oroku Nagi both fell for a woman named Tang Shen. Tang Shen only loved Yoshi, so Nagi attacked her only to be killed by Yoshi. Hamato Yoshi moved to New York with Tang Shen and Splinter, only for Yoshi and Tang Shen to both be killed by Oroku Saki, who was mad at Yoshi for killing his little brother.

Splinter fled to the sewers, where at the same time four infant turtles and a canister of mutagen from a company called T.C.R.I.(Techno Cosmic Research Institute, which would later be revealed to be run by a race of tentacled, brain-like aliens called Utroms) fell in.

The mutagen mutated Splinter and the four turtles into humanoid forms. Splinter then raised the turtles as his own adopted children and trained them to become powerful ninjas. He trained Raphael to fight with sais, Leonardo with katanas, Donatello with a bo staff, and Michelangelo with nunchucks. In this incarnation, the Turtles all wore red bandannas and their weapons were pretty much the only way to identify them).

When the Turtles are fourteen years old, Splinter tells the Turtles of their origins(at this moment they were unaware of the Utroms and their involvement in their creation) and tells them that their mission is to find and defeat Oroku Saki, who now wears bladed armor, runs a ninja criminal organization called the Foot Clan, and calls himself The Shredder.

The Turtles kill The Shredder, but he would still continue to menace the four terrapins even in death.

In the more recent issues, Splinter died of a heart attack.

1987 Animated Series-

While different from the Mirage comic books, the 1987 show is the most well-known and most popular incarnation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and is also known for introducing many elements that would stick in later incarnations.

While other continuities had Splinter as Hamato Yoshi's pet rat, the 1987 cartoon made Splinter and Hamato Yoshi one and the same.

Hamato Yoshi used to be the leader of the Foot Clan, but a rival named Oroku Saki had a sinister plan to take over. When a sensei visited, Saki used a knife to pin Yoshi's kimono to the wall behind him, making him unable to bow down. When Hamato Yoshi removed the knife, he was then accused of attempting to kill the sensei and was promptly kicked out of the Foot Clan. Yoshi fled to New York, where he was forced to live in the sewers with the rats.

With Hamato Yoshi out of the picture, Oroku Saki took over the Foot Clan and turned it into an organization of crime, donning a suit of bladed armor and dubbing himself The Shredder. Somehow, Shredder also meets and teams up with an alien brain named Krang(who was inspired by the Utroms of the original comics, except Krang was a warlord from Dimension X who had been stripped of his body and banished to Earth, whereas the Utroms were a peace-loving race from a planet in the Milky Way Galaxy who were naturally brain-like).

Hamato Yoshi's only friends are the rats until four baby turtles go down the drain. Yoshi takes the turtles in as his new pets and at the same moment Shredder dumps some mutagen into the sewers, hoping it will kill Yoshi.

Instead, the mutagen mutates Hamato Yoshi into a rat because he had recently been in contact with the rats, while the four turtles become humanoid due to being recently in contact with the human Yoshi. Yoshi proceeds to train the Turtles to be ninjas and names them after his favorite Renaissance artists. The Turtles in turn name him Splinter for his skill in breaking through wood.

Splinter would serve as the Turtles' mentor as they faced Shredder and Krang, and later Lord Dregg.

Splinter also appeared in the Archie Comics series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures, which started off as a direct adaptation of the 1987 cartoon before quickly going its own direction. Unlike the 1987 cartoon, which established that the Turtles were fully-grown the instant they mutated, the Archie Comics series had the Turtles become children that grew up normally after their mutation, as was done in all other continuities.

The Archie series also revealed that Splinter trained with his uncle Hamato Giyogi when he was young and that he witnessed the bombing of Hiroshima.

Splinter was also present in a two-episode anime based on the 1987 cartoon in 1996. In the first episode, the Turtles had obtained four Mutastones that enabled them to become Supermutant Turtles, which resembled more humanoid versions of the Turtles in angular masks. The transformation lasts for three minutes, and the Turtles can unite in their Supermutant forms to form the powerful Turtle Saint for 100 seconds. The Turtles also met Crys Mu, a benevolent spirit who was the guardian of the Mutastones.

Shredder and Krang, however, have obtained a Dark Mutastone containing Crys Mu's evil counterpart Dark Mu. It is used to turn Bebop and Rocksteady into Supermutant forms and Shredder into the dragon-like Devil Shredder. Shredder and his two mutant goons use their Super Mutation forms to stall the Turtles while Krang plots to wake Dark Mu from her slumber.

Krang succeeds in releasing her, but is confronted by Splinter. After a brief struggle, Splinter informs the Turtles that only the Turtle Saint can stop Dark Mu. The Turtles hesitate at first when Crys Mu decides to sacrifice herself to stop Dark Mu, but Splinter appears to them in an astral projection and assures them that Crys Mu can't die because she is a spirit and that they may see her again.

After using the Turtle Saint's powerful attack, the Turtles return to normal and see Crys Mu and Dark Mu both trapped in crystals, meaning that the Turtles, Shredder, Bebop, and Rocksteady all are now unable to undergo Super Mutations.

The second episode has the Turtles go to Japan to help a ninja named Hattori Kinzo, who apparently has been trained by Splinter. Kinzo had recruited them to protect an enchanted mirror containing seven Mutastones. Each Mutastone empowers whoever possesses it with an enchanted metal armor with the power of one of the seven elements as well as one of the Guardian Beasts.

However, Shredder, Bebop, and Rocksteady steal the mirror and use the Mutastones to become Metal Shredder, Metal Bebop, and Metal Rocksteady. The Turtles fortunately also use the remaining Mutastones to take on Metal Mutant forms and defeat them. Because Saki was a feminine name in Japan, Shredder's given name was changed to Sawaki.

Movies-

In the movies, Splinter struggled with Oroku Saki before fleeing to the sewers, scratching his face. After Saki's face was scarred, he retaliated by slashing off Splinter's right ear.

The second movie has him reveal to the Turtles the truth behind their origins, presenting the canister of ooze that fell down the sewers. Here, the company was changed to T.G.R.I.(Techno Global Research Institute) and was run by a human scientist named Professor Jordan Perry(who revealed himself to be an Utrom in an early draft of the script before they felt people might mistake him for Krang). After the Turtles defeat The Shredder and his mutant henchmen Tokka and Rahzar(a snapping turtle and a wolf), the Turtles return home to Splinter, who asks if they've been seen(during their battle with Tokka and Rahzar, the Turtles inadvertently interfered with a Vanilla Ice concert).

The Turtles deny being seen, until Splinter shows them a newspaper confirming otherwise. He forces them to exercise and says "Remember. Go ninja, go ninja go!"

Splinter also played vital roles in the third film and the fourth CGI movie TMNT(the former featured possible ancestors of Hamato Yoshi and Splinter, the latter had Splinter teach his sons the importance of family).

Splinter will most likely appear in Ninja Turtles, set to be released May 16 2014, but it is uncertain if he will be Hamato Yoshi's pet rat as in most continuities, or if he and Yoshi will be the same person as in the 1987 and 2012 cartoons.

Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation-

In this short-lived and widely panned live-action show loosely based on the continuity of the movies, Splinter would again play the mentor and surrogate father of the group. He also welcomes the fifth female Turtle named Venus de Milo. Splinter's advice continues to aid the Turtles in their battles against the Dragon Lord and the Rank as well as their failed attempt to bury the hatchet with Shredder, who had gone through a breakdown in the first episode when Venus used her magic powers to open his eyes to the horrible things he's done.

Before the show was cancelled, an animated second season was planned. It would have introduced April O'Neil and Casey Jones, have The Shredder resume his role as the Turtles' main nemesis, and Splinter was going to be killed off.

2003 Animated Series-

The 2003 cartoon would follow the same origin as the Mirage Comics Turtles, but there are also nods to the movie origin(Splinter scars Hun's face in a manner similar to Shredder's, the Turtles are seen as babies excitedly yelling "Pizza" as they eat their first taste of their trademark favorite food).

The 2003 cartoon itself had its own creative elements in that Hamato Yoshi had his own sensei known as the Ancient One, who would aid the Turtles in their battle against the Demon Shredder. The Shredder of this show also turned out to be a criminal Utrom named Ch'rell.

One of the biggest developments centering around Splinter is the Back to the Sewer season. After the events of the Fast Forward season(where Splinter and the Turtles end up sent forward in time to the year 2105), Casey Jones and April O'Neil's descendant Cody Jones succeeds in sending Splinter and the Turtles back to their proper time, but Cody's pompous and rude servant robot Serling and the malevolent sentient virus Viral go with them.

Viral manages to take Splinter apart and scatter his data across the internet. She later accesses a file containing the personality of the Utrom Shredder before his exile to the ice asteroid Mor Gal Tal, turning her into the Cyber Shredder.

As the Cyber Shredder repeatedly tries to escape cyberspace, the Turtles search cyberspace for the scattered bits of Splinter's data so they can put him back together.

The Turtles finally manage to collect the last of Splinter's data and reconstitute him in time for Casey and April's wedding. The Cyber Shredder, however, had used this for his final attempt to escape cyberspace. Fortunately, many of the wedding's guests were allies the Turtles had made on previous adventures. This ensured that the Cyber Shredder was destroyed for good.

Turtles Forever-

Oddly, even though this movie is a crossover between the 2003, 1987, and Mirage Turtles, only Splinter's 2003 and 1987 counterparts are seen. And no, Mirage Splinter's absence is not because he's now dead in the Mirage continuity(the Mirage Turtles are from their first encounter with The Shredder).

The 2003 Splinter teaches his sons to treat their 1987 counterparts with respect, while the 1987 Splinter kindly lets the 2003 Turtles rest at the lair, but does not reveal that he is Hamato Yoshi.

Oddly enough, the 1987 Turtles laugh at the idea of 2003 Splinter being the father of the 2003 Turtles. I know that Splinter wasn't much of a father figure in the 1987 show, but he did show some signs of being a father to them, and that was also used in the Archie Comics series, where he raised the Turtles when they grew up as with other continuities.

After the Utrom Shredder(who was driven insane to discover a whole multiverse of Turtles and planned to destroy it all by destroying the Mirage universe at an early point) was killed, Splinter and the Utrom Shredder's adopted human daughter Karai both agree that they haven't seen the last of him.

2012 Animated Series-

Splinter will appear in this new series set to premiere this year on September 29th. As in the 1987 cartoon, Splinter will be a mutated Hamato Yoshi. He will also be younger so that he can play a more active role in the stories, and will train April O'Neil so she can fight with the Turtles. It has also been said that Splinter has a biological daughter, but it is uncertain if she is still alive or if she has been killed by Shredder.

Only one tribute picture remains. The mystery character will be revealed when it is done.

Master Splinter! I always found it HILARIOUS! How he managed to actually SCAR The Shredder's face even as a TINY RAT! I don't even WANT to know what he'd do to the Shredder AFTER being mutated into a man-sized, humanoid!
