This is my next tribute picture made in celebration of the upcoming 2012 television show Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as well as the upcoming 2014 movie Ninja Turtles, which will still have them as teenage mutants. They won't be aliens, and Michael Bay is not even the director! Johnathan Leibesman is. Bay's the producer. Writers are Peter Laird, Kevin Eastman, Josh Appelbaum, and Andre Nemec. You know this film will be good when the original co-creators are involved. And the icing of the cake? Bebop, Rocksteady, Krang, the Technodrome, and Dimension X will be in it!

Anyway, this picture pays tribute to the different incarnations of Raphael, who is either the most aggressive Turtle or the cynical wisecracker depending on the incarnation, sometimes both. Beware of spoilers.

Mirage Comics-

In the original Mirage Comics series, Raphael was not the only Turtle to wear a red bandanna. ALL of them wore red bandannas, so only the weapons they used distinguished them(Leonardo used katanas, Donatello used a bo staff, Raphael used sais, and Michelangelo used nunchucks).

Despite his violent attitude, Raphael would eventually mellow out.

1987 Animated Series-

While changed a lot from the Mirage series, the 1987 cartoon is perhaps the most well-known and most popular incarnation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It even introduced many elements established in later incarnations(different colored bandannas, the Turtles eating pizza as their favorite food, etc.)

In this show, Raphael would be given a wise-cracking and cynical personality in lieu of being violent and aggressive. His bandanna was also the only one of the Turtles' to remain red, as Leonardo's became blue, Donatello's became purple, and Michelangelo's became orange(God knows what made them choose which color).

He would find a love interest in the episode "Raphael Meets His Match', where he meets a college student named Mona Lisa, who was mutated into a lizard girl. Unfortunately, she never appeared after her debut episode. If only Kevin and Peter gave her a chance. I know you weren't exactly warming up with a female turtle then, guys, but then you tell me you still aren't satisfied with the end result? It would've been cool if she returned in Dirk Savage: Mutant Hunter, especially considering that episode's focus on mutants. They could've used it to bring back ALL mutant allies introduced at that point. Still, I liked that Mondo Gecko and the Punk Frogs were in it.

Raphael also appeared in the Archie comics series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures, which started as a direct adaptation of the 1987 series, but quickly started going its own direction after adapting the first seven episodes.

Raphael has a girlfriend in this continuity as well, but she is not Mona Lisa. Instead, it was a fox warrior named Ninjara. Sadly, she too left when she and Raph eventually broke up.

A later story arc showed that in the future Raphael will marry a coyote woman named Mezcaal and that they will run a restaurant together called Turtle Island.

Raph was also featured in a two-episode anime based on the 1987 cartoon that was made in 1996. He and the other Turtles used Mutastones to become Supermutant Turtles and the Turtle Saint in the first episode, then used a mirror's Mutastones to become Metal Mutants in episode two.

Movies-

Raphael appeared in all four of the movies. He was a mix of his Mirage and 1987 counterparts in the first two films, but mellowed out in the third film, where he befriends a boy in feudal Japan named Yoshi, who is implied to be an ancestor of Hamato Yoshi. Raph spends a good deal of the film trying to teach young Yoshi that your childhood is something precious that must be enjoyed while it still lasts. One of the few things enjoyable about the third movie when you get past the terrible costumes.

The fourth movie, a CGI film called TMNT, explained that the Turtles have defeated The Shredder for good and have gone their separate ways. Before reuniting with his brothers to take on the new threat, Raph had been protecting New York from crime as an armored vigilante called Nightwatcher. His personality was back to being aggressive and violent, but that aspect is toned down when he gets in a fight with Leo and stops when he sees in horror that he was this close to killing his brother.

Obviously, he will be in the 2014 film Ninja Turtles. Leaving out ANY of the four main Turtles would be just as stupid as making them aliens, which fortunately will not be happening. The Ninja Turtles will be as we've always remembered them, as teenage mutants.

Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation-

A short-lived live-action show that was harshly criticized by many fans. The most notable change is the inclusion of a fifth female Ninja Turtle named Venus de Milo, who is a big base-breaker. Even the original creators of the franchise are divided over her(Peter hates her, but Kevin seems to be more open to her).

Raphael was still an aggressive bad boy, but now his sais were able to combine together as one weapon, and he rode a motorcycle. He wasn't very friendly to Venus, but enjoys sparring with her.

2003 Animated Series-

Raphael would again be aggressive and violent, but also hates and fears insects(I'd hate him to meet 1987 Baxter Stockman XD). He also uses a motorcycle called the Shell Cycle(wonder how Peter allowed that considering how much he hates Next Mutation, which gave Raph a motorcycle first). He also tends to bully Mikey sometimes and hates it when he says Cowabunga.

Turtles Forever-

The 2003, 1987, and Mirage versions of Raphael all appear in this film, where they have to stop the Utrom Shredder from the 2003 universe from destroying the multiverse(The Utrom Shredder had encountered Krang and the 1987 Shredder and upgraded their Technodrome with Utrom technology, using the interdimensional viewer to find to his horror a whole multiverse of Turtles).

2003 Raphael is impatient with the 1987 Turtles, but is made to apologize to them by 2003 Splinter. 1987 Raphael has a tendency to break the fourth wall, which especially infuriates Hun(who gets turned into a mutant turtle).

2003 Raphael at first likes the Mirage Turtles, but eventually finds them too serious even for him(much to the 1987 Turtles' amusement). Nevertheless, the three groups of Turtles succeed in defeating the Utrom Shredder(with the unintentional assistance of Bebop and Rocksteady) and then return home to their respective dimensions.

2012 Animated Series-

Raphael will again be the aggressive Turtle in the upcoming cartoon set to premiere September 29th this year. He will have an unmutated pet turtle named Spike, who I suspect may become the show's version of Slash.

You're not the only one to suspect Spike might become 2012'verse's Slash.

That's a nice thing to say. Of course, your username would indicate that.

The Motorcycle was probably Peter's idea. He loves motorcycles and he was allowed to help design many of the vehicles since I believe he was their connection to Playmates.

I never knew that.

I could be wrong. I know that Eastman and Laird had made designs for the Playmates toyline(which preceded and mostly inspired the 80's series) and when the 2k3 series came along, Peter had also helped design some of the many vehicles in that show(where he was also a creative consultant). It's too bad Playmates couldn't hire him or Kevin to make designs for the new show. Peter showed some of his rejected designs from the past in his blog and they look good.

I'm really impressed that those guys made sketches for four mutants during the Playmates deal. Two were the inspiration for Bebop and Rocksteady, and the other two appear to be the inspiration for Dirtbag and Groundchuck. It's true that you learn something new every day.

I'm following Peter Laird's blog where he's posted some old sketches from the Playmates deal. [link]

I don't buy action figures, but I would get one of those. I wonder if Playmates are going to have their own original characters in their new line.

I'm not sure if they will. I've outgrown toys a long time ago, and I'm not really that into buying mint condition toys for the value.

Still, I like that Playmates is still the ones making the TMNT toys. After all, the turtles kind of owe their success to that company.

I know. And there were plenty of interesting lines, like the Mutations.
