Description
A pontianak is a type of Malay ghost of a woman who died during childbirth and becomes the undead.According to the story, the Pontianak resides in banana trees that grow near houses. She appears as a beautiful and seductive woman, usually accompanied with the strong perfume of frangipani, and upon capture of her prey (usually unwary men or pregnant women), she turns into a hideous hag and kills them.
However, if one wishes to capture this beautiful spirit to make her a wife (don't underestimate how desperate some people can be), a red string can be tied or inserted (using needles) into the banana trees's heart/fruit/blossom and the other end tied to the person's window. However, if the string is ever severed, the pontianak will be released and kill her captor.
I wanted to capture the moment when she realized that someone is attempting to capture her. However.. the strings are not tied tightly enough..

that red string reminds me of the japanes red string of fate. it ties lovers and friends together by the pinkie finger. that why we make pinkie promises. at least, that's what my mom told me when i was little.

Yup, pontianak is a very famous ghost here! There's lots of cheesy horror movies and things about it too. I've never seen one but alot of people have claimed to see it.. although I think it's probably just an old bottle hanging from a tree or something, hehehe. Have you?

DARKphotography In reply to luciole [2008-10-13 16:09:10 +0000 UTC]
how do you know after you thought that's just an old bottle?
yes, I've ever seen it when I was champing with friends. I was so curious what's that on the bamboo trees seeing at us, but suddenly when I stared at it I can't do anything, even say something. and based on my family story, they said that when I was born it almost come to take me!
ouh, so in your country there's lots of horror movies too? how is it?

Wow, really? That's very interesting! I have friends who have horror stories when they go camping too.. of course, our forests here are old.
Our horror movies suck though XD
And the old bottle thing, I heard from a friend, I never experience it firsthand.

omg, you're lucky that you didn't see it. I'm sure you don't want to, because it's really" scary to get caught by it.
so the conclusion is their existence is same in our both country.
I heard that your country is often to play the movie from Indonesia, is that true?

Amazing piece. It only makes it more stunning knowing the insidious nature that lies just below the surface of that beautiful face.
Great detail in the entire piece. I like the flowers that are falling out of her hair, and the way her gown seems to be flowing from her, like a slow moving stream swirling with blood.

Having lived in Singapore all my life, you heard about potianaks a lot around here. Enough to make you think twice about lingering around banana trees. One point though, she is always said to be dressed in white.
Lovesit.
