Tails was originally supposed to be female, according to the Japanese version. I think somewhere during the development, or during the translation, he became male.

From what I've heard, that's actually false... He was, however, mistranslated as a girl in Latin America early on.

lol. Well, I heard from a SEGA nut. And apparently it's true, as one of the SEGA team admitted it in an interview on the SEGA genesis collection.

It seems quite unlikely, considering that the person who actually designed Tails himself named him "Miles Prower" right from the start.
