I think anyone would, given the chance. Personally I think they like a nose or ears, since it's stated in the game that it's cartilage.

The lack of that might indicate that they're more sensitive…
Even rolling with that theory, it still might be a good feature for an OC, if you wanted to write someone really fearless.

I can definitely see that being a thing. It would be an interesting concept to explore…
Self-mutilation for cosmetic purposes seems to be a mainly human thing, but I've got my own theories on the genetic relationship between asari and humans.

ScrewfaceRomeo In reply to LuckyFK [2013-11-14 17:09:49 +0000 UTC]
Basically. I think they abducted humans from Earth, and genetically modified them to suit their own purposes, then dropped them onto a world ideal for biotic development to let evolution fill in the gaps. It's the only explanation for how similar they look to humans in terms of body structure. Well, that and fanservice...

I think you'd regret it. They're the perfect 1%ers, they'd take over our economy and exploit the hell out of us just like they do every other Council race. Also, there's the Space-Herpies.

Keep in mind that they've got three stages of life. The ones you SEE are Maidens, the strippers and mercs. The ones back home, the Matrons and Matriarchs, are the wealthiest individuals in the galaxy, a fact that's even acknowledged over the Ilium announcements in ME2. They're crafty, sneaky, elitist, hypocritical and duplicitous. They basically run the Council, with the Turians as their cudgel to keep everyone else in line and the Salarians for tech support, and are happy to impose laws on other species to benefit themselves, which of course don't apply to them (I'm talking about Prothean Tech dispersal laws and the Temple of Athame, and that's just the one we know about). Tevos herself said that she would happily let the homeworlds of other species (and Earth specifically) burn if it would buy a few more weeks for Thessia, almost verbatim. Then begged Shepard to save their miserable whore asses when the Reapers showed up on their doorstep a few missions later. They're also shown to be the second-most racist species (after the Batarians) and the most petty. And let's not even get started on how they use their "abilities" to manipulate and cheat other races (a conversation from ME2 about marrying Salarians for the express purpose of outliving them for their will money comes to mind). They tend to lead the most vicious gangs, slavers and pirate crews (Aria, the Dantius sisters), and of all the other Spectres you encounter, the one who uses you, tricks you, then tries to kill you and your friends is Vasir. And she doesn't even have Saren's excuse of being indoctrinated, she's just in it for the money.
The main asari characters you encounter are: a) a religious fanatic who kills freely and without any oversight, based on an ancient book of rules (gee, that doesn't sound like anything from human history at all...), b) a ruthless murderer and pirate queen who (if allowed) strangles and mind-rapes a prisoner to death right in front of Shep, c) your squadmate's evil mom and the Big Bad's right hand, who even when not indoctrinated was both aware of and actively involved in concealing Prothean tech to maintain Asari superiority, d) Nassana Dantius, who's the quintessential evil CEO, f) your squadmate's morally questionable dad, who while hilarious, seems to have no qualms about killing the (very obviously) harmless Conrad Verner for causing a minor disturbance, g) Councilor Tevos, who as noted above is happy to sacrifice billions of human lives to protect her own sorry ass for a few more weeks, and is part and parcel of all the nasty and frankly, downright oppressive and evil things the Council does, h) Tela Vasir, who not only betrays you and the Council, but is willing to murder hundreds of innocent people just to kill Liara, shoot hotel guests in cold blood for getting in her way, and take hostages to avoid a fight, i) a mass-murdering sex vampire, and finally, j) Liara herself, who is ineffective at best (Tali provides you with more useful information, and she's not even pretending to be an information broker), and hits on Shepard shamelessly until you romance her, then runs you around for the rest of the series. Oh, and there's also Shiala, who starts out a mook, then gets mook's remorse and does nothing useful for the rest of the series other than hit on Shepard and run errands for a colony she helped destroy. And the Consort, who's character role and development is equivalent to a whore in a fancy dress. And all of those Merc captains you encounter who are varying degrees of psychopath.
Now, obviously, not ALL asari are like this, just like not all Turians are Space-Nazis, not all Salarians are mad scientists, not all Krogan are psychotic warlords, and the vast majority of Quarians are not beggars and thieves. Every race has good and bad members, especially humans (it doesn't get much worse than the Illusive Man). There are exceptions to every rule, and stereotypes are usually bullshit. But, they do exist for a reason, and from what the game shows us, the average asari is morally ambiguous at best, and a complete monster at worst. I'd take them over the Batarians, but the Batarians are basically North Korea IN SPACE! so that's not saying much. Even the Turians, who have one of the worst, and the most obviously fascist government in the game, at least have some sense of honor and morality. The Asari live and breath selfishness and elitism. If you plunked all the races on the Titanic, I know who would be stealing the lifeboats and running for their lives, and who would be down below helping the passengers to safety (and if the Quarians built it, it wouldn't even be sinking in the first place).

It's interesting how what the Codex says about them being incredibly wise and just and utopic is in really stark contrast to what you actually see when you play the game. Then you remember that the Codex is basically the Wikipedia of that universe, and given the fact that asari seem to run most of the galaxy, it was probably written by them. They do seem incredibly concerned about their reputation with the rest of the galaxy, even to the point of killing members of their own species to prevent one of their more undesirable traits from coming to wider notice, so it would make sense if they had a hand in writing the Codex to paint themselves as better than they really are. If this is intentional on BioWare's part, it's genius. If not, it makes for a more convincing universe, but it's still broken world building.

We do see the worse part of them though. Politicians, pirates and mercs. I bet your everyday regular asari is pretty decent. Still what you point out, intentionally or not, really make the world more alive. And I blame bad writing for Liara's uselessness as an information broker. I think she's suppose to be much better that what is shown.
In my headcanon Tevos and Aria is more honorable, so I guess that also affects my judgment.

Oh, certainly. When it gets to be a problem though is the fact that those are the type of people who run their society. Consummate politicians, 1%ers and demagogues. The fact that they are so disproportionately wealthy compared to the other species really can't be good for galactic society as a whole. And you know somebody's getting exploited.
Her character is plagued by bad writing. She was shoehorned into the first game to add an alien love interest, which was pretty much the whole reason for the creation of her race, and after that they had to keep inventing reasons why she was relevant to the plot. The only thing she did in the first game that was remotely useful was molest Shepard with her brain, which Shiala did better anyway. In the second game she was just so badly written and weird that I gave up and went after Tali instead. I was not disappointed there
I just hated the council from the get-go. When she comes to you in the third game asking you to come help save her planet, I wish there was a renegade interrupt so I could pull an al-Jilani on her bitch ass. RenShep don't take no shit from his space-hoes. Even on my Paragon play through, I couldn't help but go with the renegade dialog options there.
I love Aria, but I love her because she's a scumbag, and she's fully aware of and okay with the fact that she's a scumbag. Maybe it's just my affinity for sadistic, chaotic evil villains, but I found her very awesome the way she was.

Shitty universe to be in. Maybe Shepard is wrong in trying to save it. Just do what they suggested ... take the Normandy and hide. Maybe plant Liara's beacons for the next races if you feel generous.

Shepard isn't wrong. The galaxy shouldn't be condemned because their leaders are varying degrees of evil and incompetent. Shep's job is to give the next generation the chance to scrap the Council and do something better. And somehow I doubt someone who's come as far as Shepard could stand by and do nothing.
I'd like to see a sequel where the Galaxy fights a civil war against the Council and the more corrupt Species Governments.

even that varren sexual disease on Normandy must caused Kelly, not any Asari on board

Their lifespan seems to be based on enhanced cellular regeneration, rather than an overly robust immune system. Aging happens when cells stop dividing, and start to die off, leading to physical degeneration. Humans age because our cells have a limited ability to divide, based on the length of the telomeres on our chromosomes. That's a deliberate mechanism to prevent cell mutation and cancer, but if asari had some form of resistance to cellular mutation, then they might have significantly longer telomeres than humans, hence the significantly longer lifespan. The point being that their biological near-immortality is almost definitely unrelated to any particular resistance to disease. Matter of fact, I'd say their "social life" (by which I mean $2 whoring) would make them more susceptible to disease. And given that they mindfuck you, an asari STD is a terrifying thought. You could get sexually transmitted Alzheimer's. Or schizophrenia. Or Space-AIDs. Actually, you can get Space-AIDs from any alien. Except Quarians. With Quaries, you have the peace of mind that it might kill them, but it definitely won't kill you. Heck, when you think about it, given the asari affinity for interspecies, it's very likely that they're carriers of diseases originating from other species that don't affect them, but make a deadly (or just highly itchy) surprise for the next member of that species that happens along Space-Las Vegas boulevard at night.
I wouldn't put it past her. Serve her right for never letting my read my messages in peace.
