This is a strong image. It made me stop and look to see what was going on and I think that is what many artists want for their work (for the viewer to be arrested with the image and stop and look).
I feel the blur adds to the expression ion his face. The blackened out background coupled with the tones on the figure almost give him the appearance of an apparition or ghost.
The cropping of the figure seems just right to me but I think it would be good to experiment some more with some different cropping and lighting (just to see what interesting images you might find). I think this crop works so well because the proportions are very similar to the Golden Ratio (Google it if you are unfamiliar with it. I think you've heard of it.). In addition to the crop, I find it interesting that you chose a landscape type of dimension as opposed to a portrait type of dimension. I think the horizontal dimensions provide that extra dark space on the left creating asymmetrical balance thus making this more interesting for the eye.
I would like to see you do more of these and experiment with different subjects.

Thanks a lot, Seth!
The whole idea in practicing with the kids in the basement is because my equipment is minimal, and I haven't had a lot of opportunity to work with non-natural lights. The slight out of focus wasn't bad on this one, and I also thought it kind of worked with the photo. I left the shutter open just a second too long. I had to do some editing to get rid of the noise b/c there was a lot of it, and that might work with film, but not so well with digital.
My father-in-law type person is a dentist, and the light I used for this was a hygienist's lamp, behind a white umbrella. It makes for a soft light that seems to work pretty well for the dark image. I'll definitely be practicing some more on this style.

I have found one doesn't need high tech tools to get the neatest effects.

That's cool, I think the low light thing works.

Nice picture.
