My first official commission for the lovely , who asked me to create an Oc for her!In the end, I've put so much effort into this design that I fell in love with this character, so now I co-own her together with
Since part of the commission was to create also a back-story, here we go:
Sorte was born in Japan from a human merchant from India and a nure onna, a japanese yokai with the torso of a woman and the body of a snake.
Due to her hybrid nature and the fact that she was born blind, Sorte grew up shunned by both human and yokai society, so, after reaching puberty, she left Japan to travel the world in search of a place to belong.
While wandering around Middle-East, Sorte eventually reached india, her father's native land, and there she joined a small group of gypsy nomads, who accepted her in spite of her inhuman features.
Enraptured by the customs and traditions of the gypsies, Sorte dedicated herself body and soul into joining their culture and learning the mystical practice of clairvoyance.
Powers and Personality:
As a half yokai, Sorte is bestowed with a natural connection to the spiritual world which allowed her to obtain impressive clairvoyant skills. She is able to see persons and events that are distant in time or space as well as connecting with the essence of the people and objects she touches thank to the mystical tattoes on the palms of her hands.
As for her lack of sight in everyday's life, Sorte can still have a pretty good awareness of her surroundings thanks to the ability of snakes to trasform scents into visuals through their forked tongue.
Despite her mystical powers and strong serpentine tail, Sorte is an extremely pacific creature whose beliefs of karma and spiritualism forbid her to resort to violence even when threatened
She spends her life travelling around Asia and predicting the future to tourists while in disguise. If she perceives you are a particularly trustful person, she'll reveal her true form to you
Her favourite food is sushi, the only remnant of her japanese origins

Oh she's average, around 170 cm, unless you measure her from the top of her head to the tip of her tail, in that case she's, like, 8 meters long

This is Epic! her tail is so detailed, I seriously struggle trying to make scales, I never like leave the full body, because I never like it how they end up, but your are so good.
its really cool to see that she's actually nice, it's hard to find a mythical creature that is known for being nice xD

Ahem.. I'm actually not very satisfied of how the scales came out... I wanted them to look regular and ordered but they look messy in some places..

Ahaha yeah, when I made up her story about being a travelling clairvoyant, I thought it would be more interesting to give her a nice and peaceful personality contrasting with her snake tail and sharp teeth, rather than her being a monster feeding on people

ahhh hehe I'm a very fan of reptiles, I have a pet turtle and a two headed Dragon figurine in my desk set up, so I do love a cool character like Sorte x'D
hummm I see that in some places, but overall it's pretty good, it's a different approach than mine, my scales are a bit more like fish, yours are actually more reptilish (i don't even know is this word exist x'D)

Yes! that is really cool, but if someone tries to make a fool of her I'm 100% sure she can be very severe and make sure that insolent learns their lesson x'D

It took me such an excruciating amount of time to make all those scales that it was a bit unnerving they didn't dcome out the way I expected, but with my current skills, that's as far as I go I guess XP

It's incredibly difficult to make a fool out of Sorte as, thanks to her powers, she can tell one's true intentions by their aura at first meeting!
That doesn't make her angry though, she just aknowledge there's bad people in the world and usually is content with peacefully reveal their scheme or turn them against themselves, all with a fanged, benevolent smile on her face
Her name means 'destiny' in italian

I understand that... I guess with training and after drawing her a lot of times, you'll find a way to perfect her scales, I'm always looking for new ways to draw Shukura and Athena better, I still have some problems drawing Athena specially, cause I'm not fully happy with her outfit design, but I'm looking for an opportunity for her to destroy it and get a new one, just like I did to her sword, she'll get a new sword, eventually... ^^'

ohhh sweet, she's a passive mastermind, well usually people full of knowledge are super calm, they are always aware of everything.
Ohhh, the word "sorte" here means "luck", and "destiny" here is"destino" or it can also be "fado" but almost no one says that word for that propose anymore, only some old people. xD

I'm not sure how many times I will draw her, her design is insanely complex with all her tattoes, scales, jewelry and whatnot, but I would really love to draw her again
Ahaha you need to wait that Athena's outfit gets destroyed in order to change it? She's a girl, isn't she allowed to change clothes on a whim? XD
I actually like her current design, but I'm eager to see how you plan to dress her in later chapters
Actually, we also use 'destino' for 'destiny', 'sorte' is a bit fancier use of that same concept

I see, that's understandable, imagine making a comic with her, you would have to take a lot of time to make her, and you could accidentally leave her off model, that happens to me a lot of times and my characters are not even complex at all. ^^'
I don't think Athena is materialistic enough to come to that decision, they are also usually crossing the sea, and it may take a while for them to decide to go to main land where most civilization is developing, so I guess she might have to use this outfit for a while. My problem with her outfit is that I wanted to give her like short sleeves, just like Nike's.
Ohh well of course lol, xD after all Portuguese also comes from vulgar Latin. Ahhh well it makes sense, when someone say "try your luck" it's has connections to the future.

It took me a while to draw all those barbed dreadlocks and scales on Margaret, and you did it for many panels in different angles! You must have the patience of a saint!

Also in italian 'sorte' has a connection with luck, we say 'tentare la sorte' that means 'Try your luck'

I tend to do very fast drafts of the full chapter, and then I redraw them over the drafts, that's why I post all the pages in a row. I don't have much patience honestly, I get tired very fast and that's why I take so long to start drawing a new one. xD
ahhh sweet, that's similar to Portuguese "tente a sua sorte" or "tenta a tua sorte" we have two ways to speak xD

I also think that, but I understand why people do this way, it's just the way I decided to draw mine, don't allow me to post one page only, I go back and forward all the time to change stuff or add especially dialog, I have a huge problem with making dialog that doesn't sound cringe, I still cringe a lot... specially when I look to my previous comic that it's not even that old x'D Hopefully no one understands what is written in there haha I feel like one day I will delete that, but I regret deleting a lot of my old art so idk...
You would loose track of the story if you took that long only to make one page xD

Well, as a person that draws a lot of pages my advice would be to say it out loud and see if it sounds silly, also put yourself in your character's head, see if that's something that your character would say according to her character traits.

I'm sorry that the lenght of her tail goes as far as annoying you, there's actually a reason for that, but i don't know if it will cover every doubt you have

As stated in her bio, Sorte has suffered years of discrimination by both humans and yokais due to the hybrid nature of her body. That's why I wanted her body to look a bit.. off.
Drawing Sorte with her lower half as a snake or with legs and a reasonably lenght of tail wouldn't satisfy me because it didn't express the unnaturality of her mixed nature.
This is why I decided to give her an 'absurdly' long tail like you said, because she is not a humanoid with a snake tail, she's more like a lamia with human legs
As for the tail being impractical, why, of course it is, but that is just meant to stress how unnatural a human-nure onna hybrid is, to emphatize she's one of a kind.
Like with her blindness, Sorte has learned to adapt to her extra-long tail so that it wouldn't hinder her movements. When she walks, her tail simply slither behind her so that she doesn't have to drag it or bear its full weight.
Whenever she needs to move swiftly, her tail is long and strong enough to lift her whole human body in the air, allowing her to slither by using her tail alone.
Because of the size of her tail, she had a lot of problems in travelling while hiding her half-yokai features from humans, so she used to sneak on boats at night and hide in the cargo hold during the day.
This problem was solved when she joined the gypsy nomads group who let her travel safely inside their wagons.
When she foretells the future to tourists, she hides her tail inside a hollow table with a a hole on top that allows her to look at her crystal ball, her oversize coat will hide any scale connecting to her backside
And that's it, this is my reasons for the 'impossible tail'! XD

I'll admit I was a bit worried when you said you were annoyed, but it was clear you weren't a hater as you actually praised the character and you seemed pretty eager to know possible reasons for your doubts!
I love to talk about my artworks, especially when I create character designs! I love to add small details to make the character more original, so I'm glad when somebody notices and wants to talk about them
I'm not that kind of artist that think "It's fantasy art, it's not real, so it's fine if it doesn't make sense", I always try to make my drawings kinda realistic or, at least, with a story to justify their unrealness
That's why I was happy I could tell Sorte's story to you, I wish I had more commenters like youy

I too sometimes am bothered by small details, especially if they are the only thing wrong in a generally good artwork! I usually never point it out to the artist though, unless I'm friends with them, when I tried to give advice to artists in the past I would get either no reply, or grudge comments.
