Description
(The title of this deviation was meant to be "Bowser, Star Eater and Bowser, Galactic Behemoth - Magic". Darn character limits.)I felt slightly disappointed with how Bowser, King of the Koopas turned out. When I took a closer look, the abilities were a bit lackluster. So I decided to try and take Bowser in a different direction. For this version, I took inspiration from Super Mario Galaxy 2, and decided to have it take two forms - a relatively normal form and the gigantic, nigh-godlike form that he assumes for much of the game.
Bowser, Star Eater represents Bowser searching for the power to realize his ambition to remake the universe as his galactic empire. In Super Mario Galaxy 2, he got that power by eating the Grand Stars, and this is represented by his first loyalty ability destroying an enchantment or artifact and increasing Bowser's loyalty by its converted mana cost + 1 (it was originally going to just boost Bowser's loyalty by the destroyed card's converted mana cost, but then I decided that I wanted him to be able to benefit from eating tokens, which have a CMC of 0; and, yes, I'm aware of the missing period, but MtG Cardsmith's character limits forced me to drop the punctuation). The second ability is basically a rehash of the fireball ability from the Bowser, King of the Koopas incarnation. I made this one more versatile by letting it target players as well, but I made it less damaging in exchange. The loyalty gained is about the same, due to proliferate. The second ability is also the ability that transforms Bowser if he's got sufficient loyalty. Or you could stay away and rely on the first ability to build up enough loyalty for the ultimate, which obliterates your opponent's lands and simultaneously does massive damage, enough to potentially defeat them in one blow. Though even if it doesn't, it'll probably spell their doom anyways. (This ability was going to go on the other form, with Star Eater having a different ultimate - one more oriented towards setting up for a sweep - but that would require putting four loyalty abilities on the Galactic Behemoth, and despite precedent, MtG Cardsmith wouldn't have let me do that Star Fox allowed me to do that. Also, the damage of the ability isn't that massive now that I think about it.)
Bowser's second form, the Galactic Behemoth form (i.e. the form you fight him in during his boss fights in Super Mario Galaxy 2) is all about setting up an avalanche to bury your opponent. His first ability conjures up asteroids to pulverize the enemy with, much as he does in Super Mario Galaxy 2. (Creating 4 tokens was a typo; he was meant to create 3, much as he drops 3 meteors at a time in Super Mario Galaxy 2. Speaking of the asteroids, I was going to include a clause to potentially enable the asteroids to be used against you (which is what you have to do to beat Bowser in Super Mario Galaxy 2), and they were also going to be able to generate mana like the card I tried to have them mimic, but there's only so much a token can do, and space to write what the token would do in the planeswalker ability text is limited anyways.) The other two abilities both generate emblems to help speed up your game. The second ability damages an enemy creature or player whenever you cast a spell. The third grants you black and red mana whenever a creature dies. Both can stack with themselves, and the low costs are meant to help with that (though the third ability actually costs -6 if you don't want to revert Bowser to Star Eater form; it was going to cost -6 in the first place, with the transformation being triggered by the first ability if Bowser had less than 5 loyalty counters after it resolved, but lack of space forced me to change my plans). So the idea is to build up a lot of emblems, kill some creatures, generate mana from the dead creatures, and use that mana to fire a kill shot. Of course, black-red isn't a combination built to employ stalling strategies, so good luck with that.
The artwork for both sides of the card are screenshots from Super Mario Galaxy 2. For Star Eater, it's a scene of Bowser reaching towards a Grand Star, taken from a screenshot of a GameXplain video because there were no proper screenshots of that moment on the Internet already. (And the cropping of MtG Cardsmith wouldn't let me get just Bowser's face without getting a comically small portion of it, which is why you can faintly see a bit of the GameXplain logo on the bottom of the card. I'd also have preferred a picture where the player hadn't already claimed the Grand Star and it was its proper yellow color.) For Galactic Behemoth, it's a picture of Bowser slouching on his throne before you fight him (notice how Mario barely measures up to his ankle). I wanted a picture of him rampaging around the Mushroom Kingdom in the game's opening, but I couldn't find a decent screenshot without subtitles or logos getting in the way.
Wording Fixes: Replace all instances of "does # damage" with "deals # damage".Β Also, the Asteroid tokens are artifacts, and "Asteroid" isn't a subtype, period, let alone a valid subtype for artifacts, so change "colorless Asteroid tokens" to "colorless artifact tokens named Asteroid".
