Description
This is the Black card in my Elemental Incarnation cycle. It represents the ultimate essence of Black - self-sufficiency.Black's ultimate goal is self-sufficiency. It wants any given individual to be capable of acting on his or her own desires (this isn't quite the same as Red's goal; Black is fine with an individual keeping others down to keep him/herself up, but Red wants everyone to be free.) If an individual's desires involve being selfless, Black can condone that, as long as selflessness is the path that the individual in question chose to follow; Black is not happy about any efforts to coerce people into being selfless or to enforce selflessness (both things that White has a penchant for doing). But for the most part, Black is the selfish color. It's perfectly happy with our dog-eat-dog world (or, rather, it is willing to accept that that's the way the world works); its philosophy is that the strong have every right to ruthlessly exploit the weak, and should have no qualms against doing so... and to the weak, all it has to say is "Sucks to be you, losers!!!!!!!!!" Black seeks to obtain the power to fulfill its desires, and to obtain that power at any cost; it is relentless in the pursuit of that goal. As such, Self-Sufficiency has the power to regenerate not only itself, but also its controller; it can prevent its owner from losing the game, for any reason, but only once per activation of its ability. Self-Sufficiency is built to be the ultimate black card, so its power, toughness, and mana cost are all obscenely high.
The artwork is "Vicarious Self-Sufficiency " by . According to the artist, it depicts a world where people are self-sufficient, simply because they have to be; a world not unlike our own.

Could you adjust the text, it's kinda hard to read.
This one has the coolest picture of the five.

in the flavor of this really cool cycle, I feel like this should have intimidate or death touch as the white one has lifelink and I sorta associate regeneration that has nothing to do with the undead or sacrifice with green. not telling you how to make your card of corse, I personally like this card. and I really like the Lich's Mirror as an activated ability on what im going to assume is an elemental deity

Nice creation, although the writings are a little too small

Yeah... that tends to happen when there's a lot of writing.

Yes, but the owner-regeneration effect costs a whopping 9 mana. And since it costs 12 mana just to get Self-Sufficiency onto the battlefield, you're probably not going to be able to use that effect on the same turn that you get Self-Sufficiency onto the battlefield. Hell, that 12-mana cost means that most games will be over long before it's possible to cast Self-Sufficiency. Also, the 9-mana cost for the owner-regeneration ability means that you really have to anticipate that you would lose the game. Otherwise, why would you have that much mana untapped during your opponent's turn, or by the time your next draw phase occurred?
Also, now that I think about it, there are quite a few permanents that would allow their owner to win the game on their upkeep phase, and that effectively means that all of the owner's opponents lose the game. Self-Sufficiency's owner-regeneration effect does not destroy these enchantments (and, seriously, I wouldn't have been able to add a clause to make that happen; the card's text is cramped already), which means that the ability would have to be activated every turn - I can imagine that this would severely restrict the owner's actions. (Though, activating the effect would effectively counter any sorcery, instant, or activated ability with the effect of making its owner win the game.) Also, it would have to be activated twice to avoid losing the game if an attack from Phage the Untouchable brought its owner to 0 or less life (one activation to avoid losing due to Phage the Untouchable's effect, and another to avoid losing due to 0 or less life.) I can't imagine a player having 18 untapped swamps around unless the game has been dragging along for a really long time, and if Phage the Untouchable's on the field, that's not gonna be the case. But, despite the drawback, yes, owner-regeneration is scary-powerful... if the owner gets a chance to use it.

Yeah, that's a good point. I usually get lucky when I use a black deck, I mean getting quite a few bits of mana early on. Though Dark Ritual helps too. I can see how this card could be a double edged sword too. Good idea though!

Ehhh, the only drawback is that it costs a lot of mana. Most black cards have other drawbacks, from what I've heard.

Indeed, but I find that I can turn a lot of them around into something helpful. Anyways, I do enjoy the others that you've created. I've been wanting to create my own...
